CMU or MIT?
« on: January 14, 2010, 07:36:55 PM »
Hi everybody, it's been a while. I've been into robotics now for a few years and now its time for me to seriously think about which colleges. I am near the top of my class and am taking a rigorous course load. I want to get into the field of engineering/robotics and from conversations with people on this site, CMU seems where it's at. My question is what about MIT? They're a very famous engineering school while CMU is not as well known (at least to my knowledge). So, which is better CMU or MIT? Also, if anyone can think of any other engineering schools equatable with these two, it would be greatly appreciated.

Have a read through this thread: http://www.societyofrobots.com/robotforum/index.php?topic=5884.0
It has discussions on both and a few more with robotics courses.

Ok so from my understanding CMU has a lot more to offer robotics wise, but does it have the recognition that MIT would or an ivy league?

What exactly do you mean by " the recognition that MIT would"?

By recognition I mean, that when people think top engineering school, they think MIT. I hadn't even heard of CMU until I started doing a bunch of research on Robotics.

Well, after college, a degree from MIT would probably be considered better, with all the ivy league status and such. I don't really think you can rate either one as better for the education stuff.

Next year when I apply I will do early admission MIT, with CMU as my 2nd choice. My school has a CMU acceptance rate of 60%, so applying early for that would be kind of pointless. I would check with your schools acceptance ratings to see your chances of getting in. But I am mainly shooting for MIT for the money  :P

Your school has an acceptance rate of 60% at CMU? Wow!  :o  I'm in the process of applying to CMU now. I'm scared to death of the admissions statistics, and I'm no slouch when it comes to academics...

I'm sorry, but when I saw this $30M prize pot that a CMU team is competing for, I think the opportunity to join this cool project speaks for itself! :o
A robot could do my job...
