Title: Abt proximity sensors

Are there such proximity sensors available which can detect an obstacle in some range specified? That is, we feed a distance in the sensor say 5cm and it detects any obstacle that comes in its way in the range 0-5cm.

Also I feel that the sensor we have in an optical mouse does the same thing. Is it so? Plz correct me if i am wrong.

You could use an Sharp Rangefinder and say "if {Distance from sensor} < 5cm do blah"
If that something is magnetic a Hall Effect Sensor will work too but the Sharp Rangefinder is better if you want something general purpose.

you could also use a sharp ir sensor and calibrate it when it starts up?
so it turns on, takes a reading of whats in front of it and says if anything is in that range do something.
say you hold your hand 5cm in front of it when it starts, then it will only pay attention to things less than 5cm...

What abt the sensor in an optical mouse? isnt there any way we can use it as a proximity sensor?

not a very good one, it has to be pretty close to get decent readings.
