IR Problems

Hey guys,

we're using a Sharp IR Rangefinder (GP2D12F) and we want to try it out before connecting it to the microcontroller. So we plugged in a 5V supply to the red wire of the IR, grounded the black wire, and checked the volltage output between the green wire and ground.

unfortunately, it stays at an ~ constant of 2.9V.

Can we test the IR sensor this way or are we doing something wrong? we checked that 5V are being supplied (just in case you ask).

The bare sensor hasn't got any colored wires, so better check with the pin-out:

Yes, if connected correctly you can - just remember to change the free distance in front of it to see changes (your hands shouldn't be in front of it of course). An oscilloscope is a better tool for seeing changes dynamically though.
