As the name suggests, im wondering if I could possibly just solder a wire directly onto the ends of my standard D cell alkaline batteries. Perhaps after removing the outer plastic sheet coating?

I don't see why the outer plastic needs to be peeled.  It seems to me like you could just solder it to the ends directly.

You might want to rough up a small patch with a knife or some sand paper to remove the oxidation, and set your iron to the hottest setting (if it's adjustable).

It's not like they are that pricey I would just try it.

Previously the idea of using rubber bands has been mentioned too.

But go ahead and do it, just don't use it as an example to others of your excellent soldering skills  ;)

I tried soldering wires directly to a AA battery, they don't stick!
Check out the Roboduino, Arduino-compatible board!

because I was waiting for a "No, your batteries will explode with an equivalent yield as a 5 megaton nuke" that kind of thing. Basically I just wanted to make sure I wasnt going to get hurt or whether or not I should prepare for a certain bad situation

Thanks guys, ill scuff up the ends and try it :)

Just avoid heating the battery to much. If it gets to hot it can explode (that's what happens if you throw the battery into a campfire (not that ive tried)). On a practical level if you heat the battery to much you decrease its life and its current rating.

cant you just use a battery holder, They are made specifically to make a connection to the battery :P

Yeah but I dont have a battery holder and my budget is so freakin low I cant afford to go out and buy a $2 one lol. My place of work cut my hours again so now im looking for a second job and most likely a third.

IMO

If you can't afford a battery holder you could always try and salvage one off an old TV remote or something. You've got to have some old electronic toys laying around somewhere. Seems like it would be more fun that way--and easier gooping solder everywhere.

Well unfortunately the batteries I want to use are D cells and I dont have any scrap electronics that use them. I guess im just going to have to deal with it and ghetto rig something else :)

.... eh, maybe ill just go with the tape idea... easy enough. Good enough :)
