i have been looking for the programmer for the $50 dollar robot ( hence the title :P ) but sparkfun only have this one in stock:

is this the same except for the connection into the computer and therefore a replacement for the serial one?

do you have a parallel port on your computer?! I'm doubting you do . . . ;D

well i got this other programmer with a diff board and it looks just like that and fits into my scanner port

New computers don't come with parallel ports, so if you plan to get a new computer this dongle will become useless for you.
I suggest just spending $30 on a MKII programmer as an investment.
But yea, based on what you linked, it will work.
Description: AVR-PG2B is a programmer based on Atmel's AVR ISP parallel port design. It takes the power supply from target board. The connector is 2x5 pin with 0.1" step and Atmel STKxxx compatible layout.
