L298 motor driver connection query.......
« on: January 30, 2008, 03:22:09 PM »
Was making a circuit for a L298 motor driver and after going through datasheet i read it has two current sensing pins (1 and 15),
it says "Between this pin and ground is connected the sense resistor to control the current of the load."
does this mean the driver wont allow the current in my motor to go beyond the value of the current in the sense resistor??
and what would happen if current crosses this threshold? i mean would my motors be shut down?

Just wanted to make sure before i fried the chip with a wrong connection :P.......

Current sensing resistors are only for the current sensor... even if you typically ignore to use them there is no problem as the chip can handle many amps!!! But it would be more neat to use 'em... Have a pair of two 1Ohm connected in parraller to each pin and you are good to go!!!
But also heat sink the chip!!! It has overheating protection but I wouldn't count on.... Just use a nice neat heatsink!!!
And last if you want to use current sensors on the motors... Have some DS2438A!!!
They rock for this job (but you must know how to use 1wire bus - and it's hard... painfull but rewarding!!!)

That's all!!!
Cheers!!!
