Title: Different tires/rims on wheelchair motors
Post by: headrc on September 13, 2013, 03:07:58 PM
Does anybody have a solution for putting lawnmower/atv/go kart tires on wheelchair motors?  Do the normal wheelchair hubs match up with any of these rims?

I don't think there is a single standard for Go Kart wheels, and I also don't think there is a single standard for wheelchair motors.
You need to measure the diameter of the output shaft of the motor (or better, look it up in the datasheet!) and compare to the diameter of the hole in the hubs/rims. If they don't match, you need a coupling of some sort. There are tons of different kinds of couplings, and for experimentation, many people turn their own on a lathe to boot.

Well I know the shaft diameter ....5/8 ...but I have seen some where it looks like people have just bolted lawnmower etc. on.  As of yet ...no response from those that have done that though.  Maybe they did make adapters or buy ...I have no idea.  So far I have not found the solution that meets my needs ....

headrc, while there seems to be a standard shaft size for these motors, the same does not seem true
for hubs and rims, each manufacturer has a different hub and rim combination. so as jwatte pointed out
There are tons of different ways of coupling none standard wheels.

in the top picture I was able to just drill new holes in the lawn tractor rims to match the holes in the stock hub.

in the bottom picture I had to cut up the stock rim and re drill some holes to match the holes in the lawn tractor rim.

Hi ...thanks for the great response with pictures.  Yes ...I have come to conclusion that I going to have to create and adapter ...or modify rims I want to use to do this.  Right now I think I am going to get some rims off of a kids atv and use them.  All my lawnmower rims have stems on them made for a key slot and then C clip to hold them on.  Too much work to make an adapter for them ....not to mention cutting off the center hub stems etc.  The kids atv rims seem like they will give me something better to work with....and allow me to put on some type of all terrain tire which is what I want.  So we will see.
