touch sensor

hi guys .... we are working on autonomous underwater vehicle we have to touch the red ball by recognizing it and do other tasks also .we made ball detection code it works good. but now problm is that we cant able to recognise that we touched the ball. we are thinking abt touch sensor. if any other idea please reply . and we have to touch sensor in underwater .if u have any touch sensor that can work in water also .please reply .....

Just throwing out a couple of ideas...
A whisker switch (where a whisker is attached to a microswitch).  The switch could be in a sealed container and the whisker protrudes through the container wall.
An infrared sensor, like the Sharp IR sensor.  The sensor could be sealed in a transparent container.  I don't know if it works through water, though.

Sonar would be very cool.  I wonder if anyone has made a "hobby" sonar system.

actually we also think abt sonar but problem is it gives same value or say arbitary value when it reaches very near to ball it gives same value so it deviate before striking the ball....
