begginer problem
« on: October 21, 2009, 08:00:35 PM »
hey guz
this is the first topic for me in this great site
I'm trying to begin to learn robotics and so and I read the 50$ robot subject and I bought almost all the components needed
but I realized that it is not that easy and looking for some one to help

1-about the microcontroller , I didn't find Atmega8 avr , and bought AT89C52 instead , is there any difference in the circuit or in the way to program it
2-I didn't find Hitec HS 311 servo , only found a normal dc motor 6v
3-do I need solder

try to be simple cuz I'm really a beginner
 thank you very much

Where are you looking for these products?  The Atmega8 can be found at a lot of different places online.  Such as on digikey.com and search for Atmega8.

The servo is also easily found, but I don't feel like searching for it.  However, in the $50 robot, using 2 DC motors would be A LOT more complicated than a beginner would probably want to deal with.  It involves making at LEAST 2 more circuits that you will have to solder unless you buy them separately, however they are generally quite expensive (for a motor controller at least).  (Yes yes I know you CAN find cheap ones)

Technically, NO, you do not NEED to solder, IF AND ONLY IF you buy a breadboard.  A breadboard is a NON-PERMANENT circuit testing device, however it could be used to temporarily make a robot.  Also, expect to spend more than $50 bucks if you want to go that route.

Learn to solder before you ruin any of the parts you buy, then you won't have to worry about not knowing how to solder again.  There are correct ways to solder, and very incorrect ways as well.  Google how to solder and learn away!

thank you so much for replying

ok I didn't find servos , they said they're very rare
I'm not in the United States , and I cannot buy from any site
1-you didn't reply about the microcontroler and how I would program it ( I mean what programming language maybe c or basic or boatlaoder or what ) ?
2-I'm ready to go through dc motors as long there is no servo
3-about soldering I mean do I have to get this machine that is used in tutorials for soldering I don't know what is called?

thank u very much

Um, I'm not a big expert on programming the microcontroller as I'm just starting myself, but I'm pretty sure you can program in C or Basic depending on the microcontroller you buy.  I don't know what the language is for the $50 robot, but I'm sure someone knows.

Also, I have no idea what machine you're talking about that is used in tutorials for soldering.  All you need is a soldering iron and some solder...

The microcontroller AT89C52 is 40 pins chips so the pins connection is difference from the $50 robot and it don't have ADC build-in, need external crystals to work, it would be A LOT more complicated than a beginner to deal with.

I have no choice to disappoint you if you get a more complicated microcontroller to start with, You can learn more about microcontroller AT89C52 from this site, you have long way to go.

so is it important to get the servo , cuz I d'dn't realy find it

and  a friend of mine said to me the at89c52 don't have DCA ( + it doesn't contain ADC )

what can I do ?
this is teling me that I have maybe give up

Hi,

what can I do ?
this is teling me that I have maybe give up
Don't give up - go for something that matches what you have.
Here's a lot of robots based on the 89C52 and DC motors:

Regards,
Søren

A rather fast and fairly heavy robot with quite large wheels needs what? A lot of power?
Please remember...
Engineering is based on numbers - not adjectives

You can build these Line Follower Robot using DC Motors & 89C52
Line Follower Robot 1
Line Follower Robot 2
