Google Wave useful for robots?
« on: November 29, 2009, 12:39:42 PM »
I just got a Google Wave account (its an invitation only thing).

If anyone has any *specific* ideas on how to make it useful for SoR and making robots, feel free to share!

The best idea will get you an invitation ;D

New chat system?

Maybe someone could base some kind of robot communication on it?  (Yeah I'm makin a stretch)

Maybe you could give live tutorials on how to do things... program a microcontroller... etc.  With people asking questions the whole time.  Kinda like an online class.  Cause while yes text tutorials are good... and video tutorials are better... there's just nothing like seeing it live and asking questions.

OOOOO two ideas... #1...  how about some developer makes some "gadget" that let's us have some kind of robot building and programming competition on the Wave online game things??  Like we'd have an hour to design, develop, build (on the computer of course), and test our robot to do a certain thing?  That might be a bit hard...

#2... We could have collaborative sessions on solving common robot problems.  Like maybe one day we could have a session that tries to work out a method for slam?  Or tries to work out a better mapping program etc.  Multiple minds are better than one.  Plus it'd be a learning experience for people who aren't as good at things like that...

I can only think of online presentations of various robots, concepts etc etc etc.....
And this is actually a skill that is welcomed by many companies, know how to make good presentations on anything...
Being interesting to the crowd etc etc etc....

What do you say, I just propose....
This will attract even more users to robotics...

Well one idea that I had was when we where working out the details for the specifications of OSCAR it would have been handy. We where passing notes to each other in the documents as it was and that would have been easier to do because the original document could be followed by a stream of comments and you could see who edited what and when.

Another idea would be collaborative coding. post code to the wave and as people talk about it and edit it then you have a good record of whats happened and everyone is on the same page. I still have not figured out everything it can do.

I think google is hoping to do a twitter and develop something simple and let the community come up with ways to use it. I don't see wave taking off for a few more years.

I have some more invites if people really want them. I got 23 or so of them I'm not gonna use. PM me your email and I can get them out to you.

I am also for collaborative coding, but maybe mechanics, like 20 people is making one robot at the same time and principal but adding some changes... This is very good because we could get a robot to perfection!
