Forum Posting Sins.
« on: July 10, 2010, 07:02:18 AM »
Hi All,
I've written a list of forum posting "sins" for all the noobs out there...
  • First and for most, DO NOT DOUBLE POST!!!
  • Do not spam, what we mean by "spam" is:
    • Do not advertise in your posts.
    • Do not list random links a the bottom of your post.
    • ANY THING not robot related.
  • CAPITALS ARE ANNOYING SO DON'T DO IT, ISN'T IT ANNOYING!
  • Do not directly address Admin about things you don't like about the forum, this is Admins website and he can do what he wants with it!
  • Do not do this:LOL
  • Or this LOL
And don't use loads of smilys and abbreviations
And Admin said "Let there be robots!"
And it was good.

And it's stretched across 6 topics...
And Admin said "Let there be robots!"
And it was good.

I search after the reason why foreigners use the phrase "I search after..." every time they post

  • First and for most, DO NOT DOUBLE POST!!!

... Why?

Especially on a technical forum.  Ya, one line posts should be combined.  But some of us end up reporting progress and adding questions as we go.

What I mean is that when I'm working on a project and experimenting, I'll do something, have some questions arise from it, and post: (1) what I've tried; (2) what my setup is; and (3) what my questions are (and etc.).  I'll make such a post on the off chance that someone might have an answer.  But I'm perfectly capable of eventually answering the question myself.  So I'll search the internet/try whatever/continue working, and eventually I might answer some questions, and have some new ones.  Then I'll make a new post regardless of whether someone has replied since my last post.  Think of the posts as entries in a work notebook.

So ya, if you have a problem with that, I have a problem with you. Just saying.

Yeah but Admins doesn't go into detail of what a spam is and he doesn't mention CAPITALIZING EVERYTHING  ;D
And it's stretched across 6 topics...

Well you didn't go into real detail either.  You just listed a laundry list, and zero explanations of reasoning.

Hmm...

Technically this is double topic-making-ing.

Now shouldn't that be a rule, yeah?

I see that you are trying to help control the forums, but it's done already in this form.
But at-least your trying to help I suppose...

Capitalizing everything is really annoying (to me), so is loading the post with smileys, they have a purpose but over using them is annoying (really).
I've listed what I have seen listed as spam.
Double posting is really creating two topics exactly the same subject, same wording, and same section too.

I agree one line posts should be combined, to all those who add questions as they go that's probably fine, just describe your problem well...
Reporting progress is fine too, I do that myself.

I have one!

Month old member newbies shouldn't make posts about what the rules should be on this forum.

If Admin wanted to make the rules any more clear, then he would have done so himself. So by making this post, you are not setting the guidelines Admin would want, but the rules you think we should follow.

I hardly see any common knowledge decency rules broken around here, and is probably why Admin never felt the need to define such rules to detail. But if he does we would all follow them easily. However, it's his place to make that decision, not yours.

Actually, its ok to make suggestions. But, even if your idea is a good one, any suggestion that requires a lot of work I probably wouldn't do . . . I'm just too busy :-\

Do not spam
Robot related spam is acceptable. Just make sure you write [advertisement] in the subject line or I might delete the post ;D

Do not list random links a the bottom of your post.
I just noticed this comment . . .

Spam bots will say something semi-intelligible and include a random link at the bottom of the post. In the past its been convincing enough that Dunk, Soeren, and Webbot have all been fooled and replied to them. :P

If the link looks suspicious, click the report thread button and I'll have a look at it.

This happens several times a week . . . :'(
