I wonder, why do those robot cos so much to develop? $3M is a lot for a remote control machine. I am pretty sure any decent engineer could build one of those with similar capabilities but 100x cheaper($30k) or less. Actually there is even a topic in this forum wih a video that shows an autonomous very efficient paint ball gun robot built by a hobbist.

The issue is, you can't take a cheap robot like that and throw it through a window, or have it fall down a set of stairs, and expect it to continue running. The robots we build in the "garage" are nowhere near robust enough for use in the real world, by people who treat them as just another machine. Also, any robot with a weapon has to be even more robust, because you can't have the weapon firing by accident under any circumstances, including getting damaged by other weapons, getting pushed into a ditch full of water, and any other number of bad things that would utterly destroy a "hobby-level" robot, and produce completely unknown results.

In addition to what JonHylands said, a single engineer costs about $100k/year. That includes not just wages, but office space, equipment/software, administration costs, etc. A project typically has multiple engineers, for multiple years. For weapons, you need to rent special testing areas that could cost $1k/day or more. Then there are mil-spec certification and safety fees. Costs add up . . .

Even though the last one was computer graphics, it still looked cool. Maybe in another thirty or forty years it could become reality.....   :)

It would be so cool if the robots had paintball guns and then they use each other for target practice while dodging behind things to avoid the paintballs. Robots know when it hit the other robot when the other robot is covered in paintball paint. I love this idea. Robots playing paintball.

im gunna try to explain this, sorry in advance for going more off topic.
guns dont kill people, they are mearly a tool. If guns wernt here, murder rates wouldent realy drop, they would mearly change, with stabbings being the top method of killing.
Guns however level the playing field so to speak, criminals will always get guns, shootings in london are very common, yet guns cannot be bought/sold/purchased/made/used/owned anywere in england, but that doesnt matter to the criminal because he is, a criminal. He plans on breaking the law, so breaking another isnt a problem. criminals will always get guns, you cant own guns in new york, but it has one of the highest shooting rates in america. Making guns available only helps those who are trying to do the right thing, a woman with a gun can save herself from being raped. a father with a gun can save his wife and kids from a burgler. Unfortionetly the burgler or rapist will usualy die in the process, but they chose that path, they chose the violent life style. The children and wife in the house didnt chose to be put in danger, and the woman certainly didnt ask to be raped.

In closing, murdurers will always be murderers, they will kill with or without a gun, and will try their best to get a gun wether or not their legaly available. But the murders are not the guns fault, they are the fault of the person who missused the tool(gun) on an innocent person, instead of for hunting, self defence, ect. they would still prey on the innocent if they didnt have guns, theyd just have to use other tools.

sorry for going off topic.

ON TOPIC: robots with guns are awsome, and will surely make the battlefield safer for our boys over in the sandbox right now
