Getting started...
« on: May 09, 2011, 11:48:56 AM »
Hello!

I am 17 years old, and I always wanted to make robots, from the first time I saw one. Now I think I am able to do that, and many thanks to this site there is a Step by step tutorial. But I have a little problem. I live in Hungary, and I don't know where should I buy the parts. Because the shipping from UK would cost more than the parts itself. So if I go into an electronics shop with the list of the parts, will they know what I am looking for?

Thank you for your help!

It will depend how good your electronics shop is. They will probably know what you are looking for but may not have everything in stock. You will probably need to visit at least two shops to get everything you need. Here in the UK no one seems to sell both electronic components and servos at good prices so you have to turn to specialist shops for the best prices.

If you do order from the UK have a look at bitsbox who sell all the components you need for the $50 robot controller. They post to Europe for £2.75 (around 830 forints?). This would save you money over the existing SoR UK price list from Rapid and T2. You would still need to find servos, batteries and a programmer. I am not associated with bitsbox in any way other than being a happy customer.

Do you have a local shop that sells RC equipment? If so it will probably be cheaper to buy servos from there. Budget AVR programmers can be had from ebay, but pay close attention to user feedback.

All the best!

Thanks for the answer, hopslink!

Well, tomorrow I will give a try to some of the electronics shops here.
And as I saw you mentioned bitsbox, if the shipping is really that cheap, then it would be good. I will answer tomorrow again.

Well, I tried it, but unfortunately they don't have these things. Then how could I buy from bitsbox?

See their ordering page >here< for more information. Follow the links to see international shipping prices.

They do not use part numbers so I can't give you a list. You will have to follow the menu and read the pages to find the parts you need. Fortunately they don't sell a huge range, so it is not too difficult. If you can't match the parts from Admin's list then give a shout.

Good luck!
