Title: What Sharp IR sensor to buy (more or less range) ?
Post by: logicguy on March 06, 2010, 09:22:38 PM
Hello!

In my local robotics shop there are two Sharp IR sensors available, one is capable of measuring distance from 4 cm to 30 cm and the other is capable of measuring distance from 10 cm to 80 cm which is a big difference.

I'm currently building the rangefinder robot following the tutorial on the society of robots page and I'm interested in what kind of IR sensor I must acquire for the robot to work without problems. Is there going to some kind of difference when calibrating them with the algorithm ? What IR sensor do you recommend ?

Thank you in advance.

i am not sure if there will be a calibration problem, i wouldnt think so though.

If i was you i would think about what you could use the sensor after the $50 add on. I would think that the 10 - 80 cm sensor would be alot more useful later on and have many more applications. When you think about it what are you really going to want to measure under 10 cm. If you need to admins infrared buffer sensors in the IR tutorial would be a good option for less than a few bucks.

Over all i think the 10 - 80 is a much better investment.
