Hi everyone, I've been searching around on the internet for a while now and seem to be just getting more confused by the minute. I have recently been informed that I need to build a sumo bot for my school's scioly team in the next month. it can be R/C, so no micro controller is needed, but i just wondered if someone could get me a push in the right direction. I read the article on how to build an r/c robot, but I am having trouble finding all the parts online, and my main worry is that the parts I buy won't be compatible together. anyways, the robot has to be able to fit in a .5 meter cube and run on 18 volts or less. can anyone give me a list of parts or something that I should start off with? Thanks so much in advance, I really appreciate it. I'm desperate here.

is it alrite if it goes slow or does it have to go fast. if it goes fast it won't have much torque and if it goes slow it wont has heaps of torque. for fast use motors and for slow use servos. i reakon that servos are better.

It's fine if it goes slow. the problem I am finding is that I have a good idea of how to set it up mechanically (it can be pretty damn big) but I don't know how to set up the electronics/what to buy for the RC system..

well the rc gear isn't really my speciallity but i changed the subject to ADMIN WHERE ARE YOU??? and hopefully it will attract his attention cuz he is pretty good at stuff like that.

the quickest/easiest way to get into RC is just to buy a transmitter package.
these things include everything you need to get started in one box.

does anyone else know of places to buy these kits? the problem with servocity.com (and most other places) is that they only sell air transmitters - illegal to use for ground based robots . . .

Please take a page from the caveman and don't reinvent the wheel. Buy a cheap RC car and take the controller board attach your hardware and probably some beefier amplifiers. The best part is that some other poor sap has already had to go through the trouble of dealing with the FCC so it's legal as far as the transmitter goes. The whole part of this device not being aloud to be used for anything except its origionally designed purpose... :-\ . Anyway I hope this post did not reach you too late and wish you best of luck on the project.

:) My scioly team doesnt ever go to nationals, so sadly we wont need to make a sumo bot. Yet i was looking over the rules for bot, and they made it unnecessarily expensive.
But anyway... i dont think he can use a cheap R/C car's board because it has to be able to run on 2 frequencies

OK if people are going to criticize me instead of helping the kid here I go. From what I read you seem to be overwhelmed by the project as a whole don't be, encapsulate. Break the project down, what you need is a transmitter, receiver, a CODEC and based on what SomeSaba has said maybe a killswitch. Design each mini-system to be modular so the output is as simple as you can get away with without sacrificing utility. The transmitter/receiver should use PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) but that is a matter of opinion try http://www.discovercircuits.com/R/rad-control.htm for some ideas. You'll want what every sumo bot has which is a wedge on the front so it can flip an opponent on his back and push it out of the ring. Go for speed; torque is nice but F = M * A, and you want a quick kill so as to intimidate the opposition; this is again another matter of opinion. Other then that your down to the actual construction

Definitely good advice. An added bonus is that modular systems are easier to scrap for future robots, saving time and effort in the longer term.
