Yes, 6 volt to red, ground to black. For the yellow wire you need to send a pulse lasting from 1 ms, to 2 ms, 1.5 ms being centered. You need to send this pulse many times a second.

If you dont have any programable robot brain then you could get an RC reciever and transmitter and connect the servo to one of the ports, or you could buy a specialized servo testing tool that allows you to send precise waves to the servo and watch its rotation.

usually less . . . depends greatly on the servo, for example digital servos need fewer updates than analog . . . I often send just 10-20 per second . . .

The HS-311 is a standard analog hobby servo.  My study and experience with Hitec servos holds that it should be pulsed at 50 Hz or it will lose torque.

I really only have experience with Hitec servos, so other servos must be different as Admin says.

But if you are just testing then the pulses can happen as often as you want. The normal is that every 50 times a second you send a pulse of the correct duration. Don't do it more than 50 times a second as you wont gain anything. But as Admin says you could do it 10-20 times a second. Normally what happens is that if you do it 'less times per second' then the movement gets kind of jerky - but it should still rotate.
