Ok I just got one of these. I have worked with a cellular modem before so have some experience. Minus the problem with finding/creating a power cable, this is a good buy. Noone knows what they are. So I just got one for $1 plus shipping. I am going to use it as a GPS receiver. Could be used for a large robot platform and it also works as a wireless cellular modem on the gsm network. Has some IO as well controllable by RS-232. You have to use AT commands and those who are used to old modems know what those are. We are using a similar setup to control and monitor 42 radio stations on my network.
Spec Sheet:

Has 2 Digital I/Os, 2 Digital in, 4 analog in, USB, RS-232, Sim card holder, GPS receiver, Audio hookups
And it is rugged. Designed to be installed in a vehicle. I want more of them but I am holding back. Shipping is a little bit of cash and you get no antennas or cabling but it cost me $1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! plus shipping :) The site has several auctions ending in the next few days. Don't fight over them :)

Received the modem. keep forgetting to take it to work and power it up using the cables we have here for our other modems. I'm going to have to spend some cash on a GPS antenna but sparkfun has a good one. I'll keep experimenting with it.
