Don't worry about that, there are robotics clubs in NYC with mostly adults and engineers in college , but there are a couple of high school students there too.

then I think you should get started on your own ( without robotics clubs) , and just use the internet

hmmm a good and fun way to get started in my opinion is the Parralax Boe Bot, it used the Basic Stamp II mmicrocontroler comes with a book on programming and there are many more BSII books. I made one that would avoid objects with a ping radar sensor on a 180 degrees servo to look around when it detected something and choose the clearest course, i almost one too( first two judges gave me top score) but my third stupid judge didnt think i did it :-\ with this kit, its very fun to get started with microcontrolers and you can work up to soem pretty good litle bots quickly.

Your age doesn't matter, show an interest and after a while they'll take you seriously.!
