Title: Sharp IR range finders
Post by: shuki on July 22, 2009, 02:56:56 PM
Hi everyone,

I'm a newbie to robotics atm... after studying everything behind circuitry, mechanics, and programming for a while I decided to build a robot.
My first robot is gonna be a simple rover that uses ir sensor's to avoid obstacles.

After looking at the different spec sheets for the different ir sensors, I couldn't decide wether to get the 1 inch - 12 inch sensor or the 4 inch - 30 inch sensor.

either : http://www.acroname.com/robotics/parts/R146-GP2D120.html
or :http://www.acroname.com/robotics/parts/R48-IR12.html

If I go with the gdp12 (longer range), can I program the robot to only react to obstacles located a certain distance from the robot?

Any help would be great :D
Thanks!

What you do is get the 4inch to 30 inch sensor, and you mount it 4 inches back on your robot ;)

yup, you can also have this first set when you start up your robot...
