Solder Splattered into my Eye
« on: January 05, 2009, 05:09:29 PM »
I've had a rather unnerving experience a few minutes ago. I was soldering without my glasses on ( first time without glasses in a long while) and the solder shot up into my eye. Luckily, there doesn't seem to be any damage -i can see fine and my eye is not red. But for a second I was like " Crap, am I blind?" .

lol, i was soldering and the soldering iron slipped. i grabbed hold of it by instinct and then dropped it again because it burned all my hand and molten solder was also on the tip. i'll never forget that.

lol you are so lucky! Am glad nothing happened. It is always my biggest concern when soldering, I even refused to use one at the lab because they had no safety glasses.

Your eye must have had enough moisture on it, so that the solder didn't have time to get at your eye tissue before cooling off.

Then why use the iron? Just use a magnifying glas... If you drop that, won't hurt anythig and it will also save on your electricity bill  ;)

I remember the days I had my little electronics lab in a closet about 4 feet (square). I had a table with a piece of plywood on top so I can burn it or drill it or whatever damage I was capable of... The main problem was when I was soldering wires, I allways hadn't have enough hands, and before the joint was properly soldered I allways had burnt fingers from holding the heated wire... And somethimes I was using my fingers to swipe really fast the iron tip to clean some dirt off! Of course my skin would get cooked and even smell a bit... But who cared? To cool off my fingers I was holding my ear lobe, as I heard it absorbs heat and disipates it fast. You know what? I worked! Never had solder in my eyes, I guess I keep my head at a safe distance... Hehe... And my method of desoldering (still use it sometimes) was to hold the board with the left hand, melt the solder, then turn the board upside down and hit the table with the bottom of my hand (the part used in karate moves to break bricks). The solder would splash on the table leaving the hole clean! Just hope not to use this methid to desolder a 40 pin microcontroller...

it was afternoon :P and who cares about the bills!!! It's my parents house :P :P
I even leave my PC more that 24 hour on... This is also a cool method of renewing your hardware!!!
If they break cause they do in about a year and I got them replaced with anything I want at the price I bought them!!!
Warranty baby!!! They don't even ask, you return the part and if it is broken it's replaced!!! Period!!!
You knew that??? ;D ;D ;D

Anyways, that was off topic...
Well... We are on the same boat.... I seem to lack basic equipment other guys have...
I really need to get a scope!!! Darn!!! :'( :'( :'( :'(

Now you know why I tell people to wear goggles when soldering!

But not just soldering, also while clipping leads off after soldering components.

Wearing jeans is also a good idea. ;D

And for those too lazy to buy safety goggles, go to walmart and buy one of those ultra cheap clear sunglasses for like $8. They aren't shatter proof, but not a problem for soldering.

as for warranty. i love it. in 2 years ive already replaced my ram and hard drive.  only had to pay $6 shipping total.

I just rebuilt my system this week actually. New motherboard, CPU, and RAM. I upgraded to a quad core CPU because my computer lagged like crazy in Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance when 6 factions all had like 400+ units firing lasers, missiles, and heavy artillery shells at each other O_o.
Note: Dont accidentally corrupt your hard drive and lose absolutely everything. Also, might want to back up important things such as robot files, CAD files, and other essentials... ****. ~4 years of data gone. Oh well. Fresh clean start now :)

Anyway. Last month or so I got White Lithium Grease in my eye. Big glob of it came down and got me in the eye after I fixed the limit switch and drive screw for the garage door. That stuff works great for mechanical joints but it sure does burn like hell in your eyes.

yeah chkdsk is such a b***h. it's what actually corrupted my drive. luckily i had everything on another partition and recoveryfix found 99% of my files

i was thinking of adding 4gigs to my system, but then again i dont do much intensive stuff. the c2d is holding its own surprisingly good for a 2years old cpu

mmmmm, there is something in the system properties....
System will run slower (almost you won't notice...) but it's sure
that in a power cut you won't loose your disk (format data etc....)

I 'think' TrickyNekro may be talking about disabling background writes. MS called it something like 'write behind'. They tried to do this to reduce the amount of physical disk access. This means that all read/writes go via a cache. For reads this is fine but is dangerous for writes. The cache allocates areas from the hard drive but only writes data out in the background. Problem is that it also does this for the meta data (FAT) about the areas of the disk that are in use versus those that are free. So if you end up rebooting, and some of this info hasn't been flushed to the drive, then the drive ends up with circular chains in the FAT table (which is very bad). This used to cause all sorts of issues if you re-booted the machine without closing it down properly - ran faster but killed your hard drive  - a typical MS optimisation!!

The option was certainly there under Win95 etc but seems to have disappeared in XP as far as I can tell. (Hey -they got rid of one of the 'kill my computer' options!)

Unless you know otherwise ...... and they buried it somewhere else......

So TrickyNekro isn't being ellusive - it's just that your version of Windows may have a different user interface depending on which day of the week it was compiled on. :o

Jeez you people are unlucky. I can't say I've anywhere near the accident list on here and I've been soldering since I was about thirteen.
I'd like to point out though that DISTRACTIONS are the most dangerous in my opinion. When serving my apprenticeship I stopped desoldering to talk to my journeyman and never noticed the part of my iron between the tip and handle was leaning on an electrolytic. The electrolytic exploded before we noticed the smell.
No-one was hurt but my ego took a dent and it took a couple of hours for our hearts to slow down again  :)
The question that drives me hazy:

Am I, or the others crazy?
