near space weather balloon + 3d camera + ...
« on: October 11, 2012, 02:56:16 AM »
HI all,

My group and I are planning to build a near space weather balloon and have a brief idea of what we need. We want :

Communicate via xbees and then remote control the camera via pc (for about 20km)
Use an arduino
Have a full hd camera that has 3d that can be rotated 360 and moved at an angle up and down.
GPS with accurate signals
Thermometer
Battery to last at least 10hrs
Make it with around 1000 dollars (Australian about 1000 US).

We are just wondering WHAT WE NEED TO ACHIEVE THIS.
We know that we will need many backups in case one element of the project stuffs up. Could you please give us a brief list of what we need (note the environment of altitude 30km +)

Hi,

That ain't gonna happen, you're gonna need faer better/stronger comms equipment to get a range of 20km.

Could you please give us a brief list of what we need (note the environment of altitude 30km +)
Cash, Luck and a shoulder to cry on ;)

Søren

A rather fast and fairly heavy robot with quite large wheels needs what? A lot of power?
Please remember...
Engineering is based on numbers - not adjectives

A deep understanding of thermal physics.

Depending on how high you want to go, on the way up things will get very cold, so you'll want good thermal insulation, but go high enough and the lack of air density means convection cooling doesn't work and your PC will go into over temp shutdown.

But if you can get data transmitted real time or saved to the HDD, just let it go until it starts failing. You can still get some cool pictures. It will work for a while...it's just a matter of how long.  Then there's the matter of finding it when it comes back down.  You should not count on the GPS unit functioning as it comes back down unless you really design it properly (active cooling and heating and humidity control) (and radiation shielding maybe too).

Google, read, google again read some more.
There is a lot of good info out there on weather balloon projects and the electronics used.
