looks like it will work fine with an mcu

Keep in mind the fact that 2.4 GHz is shared with microwave ovens, wireless phones, video transmitters, 802.11, and new things we don't know about yet. Expect interference.

I want to do wireless data logging from the 50$ robot less than 150 feet range. I find bluetooth and zigbee expensive.

for once i found one that operates at 433 mhz , tats a nice freq i guess not many stuff works at the same freq
it ranges about 30 meters

Very second sentence:
SMW240 is designed for short range (50 meters) RF communication applications with up to 62.5 kbits/sec data rate.
But it will work with the $50 Robot without effort:
SMW240 has UART interface to communicate with the external peripheral.
