there is admins gripper design, i am sure i have seen it pick up a water bottle sometime and it has a good shape for the job. or there is other gripper designs that could pick up a bottle but would have to line the surface area. like this one posted on Sor.

you also have to ask, what is the shape of the bottle, what is the weight of the bottle.etc

well if it is a standard water bottle you could design your own version of admins as i dont know if admins is large enough for you. and you will have to do the math on what servos will be able to pick up the bottle.

do you have to have it mounted on a robot or a stationary platform?

is this gripper going to be ONLY for picking up water bottles?
is so, designing it would be quite simple since it is only intended for one purpose

Couldn't you just replace the servo with a stronger one?

Yes, i found one with almost exact dimensions!
HS-311: http://www.servodatabase.com/servo/hitec/hs-311 (http://www.servodatabase.com/servo/hitec/hs-311)
HS-422: http://www.servodatabase.com/servo/hitec/hs-422 (http://www.servodatabase.com/servo/hitec/hs-422)
HS-485HB: http://www.servodatabase.com/servo/hitec/hs-485hb (http://www.servodatabase.com/servo/hitec/hs-485hb)
The last one is identical to the 311 with heaps more torque but may be a bit expensive.
The second one is slightly stronger with a tiny length difference but is cheaper than the last.

Wow, $30 for a hs-311? Ripoff much?
Yes, that is the right one.
