Title: CCD sensor needed - Kodak solution but no known supplier
Post by: TrickyNekro on August 18, 2011, 10:08:12 PM
Hello guys,

I've been experimenting with the idea of wanting to experiment with CCD sensors for some time now,
But I've been unable to find good suppliers (with some nice big name, other than some China guys).

I've been looking into Kodak for some time now, their sensors are more than fine really...
Thing is... how do I get my hands on one...

There are other companies too, but Mouser or Digikey are no no no go...

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,
Lefteris Greece

How do you do that?   :P   ;D

If it's just for experimenting, I assume the picture quality isn't the most important aspect?
If so, you could rip one out of a cheap camera - they're not half as bad as you might think actually - it's usually the optics that is the largest difference in cheap vs. expensive and the software matters a lot too.

Sparkfun has got several modules as well and at least one of them can generate .jpg files.

Yeah... It's all in ones mind after all ;-)

Basically, I've got in mind some Chinese modules. Far superior optics from what sparkfun really has in their modules.

What I'm curious to find is whether I can find a supplier of CCD chips... I mean only the chips,
not the optics not nothing.

It's nice experimenting with optics, get some lens, finding their focal point etc...
And you don't need anything fancy as coding comes with the CCD...

Problem is... I want to play with both! Got some ARM chips laying around...
And then improvising, coding and optics.

Still, don't l look like a guy, that tries to kill his time :-p

Hi,

Hamamatsu makes both CCD's and CMOS IIRC and Sony would be another option (I have a wicked Sony chip - active area of around 35x40mm, but sadly I haven't been able to find any data on it at all).
I think the best way of getting a chip is by emailing some manufacturers and ask if you can buy a sample of one or two that you find interesting - much easier than finding a retailer and you might get lucky.

Yeah, I get the exact same feeling whenever I meet twin bombshells  :D

Nope, you're looking like a guy with a few not-quite-finished projects collecting dust on a shelf.
Never mind that, it's a virus transferred by contact... With electronics components  ;D

Hmmm, Hamamatsu is a nice company. Years before I was looking for some laser distance finder, and they had a once chip solution. Funnier fact is that it measured distance with the TOF and not with triangulation. Gotta admit the Japs are good at electronics, far ahead of their time. Sony also has a long fame with CCDs, never been disappointed from their camera phones, for at least 8  - 9 years now, that I use them.

That's a dark one!  :P

Yeah, I know....  :-[
I build many things but have this bad thing. I get the difficult part done, and them I kinda get bored with the subject.
But that really leaves many uncompleted projects. I'll see if I have some time this week to post one of the latests,
at least the point I've got them running :-D
It's the least I can do for this community!!!

Thanks man, I really appreciate a good talk with you ;-)
