for the $50 robot microcontroller you connect the batteries (battery pack) to the middle pin which is ground and the left pin ( the side closest to the programmer) right?

The best way to be sure is just to check the schematic and the wiring.
You want ground to be the pin row furthest from the mcu, while power is the middle row.
Just trace the uh . . . traces . . . back to the battery header.
