Title: Gmail thinks I am in Germany?
Post by: Admin on April 09, 2009, 12:45:03 AM
(not robotics related, but not sure where else to get help for this!)

Google no longer allows me to use gmail because:
Quote
We can't provide service under the Gmail name in Germany; we're called Google Mail here instead.

If you're traveling in Germany, you can access your mail at http://mail.google.com (http://mail.google.com).

Oh, and we'd like to link the URL above, but we're not allowed to do that either. Bummer.

For general information about Google, please visit www.google.com (http://) (http://) or www.google.de (http://) (http://).
But I live in Thailand . . . I follow that other link, but Gmail just hangs and doesn't allow further access . . .

Doing a trace route, this is what I find (edited):
Quote
  9    34 ms    31 ms    31 ms  61-91-210-5.static.asianet.co.th [61.91.210.5] (thailand)
 10    33 ms    32 ms    31 ms  61.19.10.29  (australia)
 11    33 ms    31 ms    31 ms  202.47.253.130  (australia)
 12    64 ms    64 ms    63 ms  74.125.50.213 (US)
 17   132 ms   132 ms   131 ms  jp-in-f102.google.com [66.249.89.102]
So it doesn't route through any country other than Thailand, Australia, and the US.

Googling the problem (http://www.google.co.th/search?q=%22We+can%27t+provide+service+under+the+Gmail+name+in+Germany%3B+we%27re+called+Google+Mail+here+instead) it appears people in Texas (http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg00468.html), Ohio (http://www.techsupportforum.com/microsoft-support/internet-explorer-forum/312061-computer-ie-thinks-i-am-germany.html), North Carolina (http://groups.google.co.uz/group/blogger-help-loginissues/browse_thread/thread/c5ae38b820d17753), Switzerland (http://markmail.org/message/gs5w7txjtugpljri), and Australia (http://devilworks.com/2009/03/15/gmail-thinks-im-in-germany/#comment-31198) (2 (http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090317173011AAwtXkd)) are having the same problem. Many more . . .

Anyway, until this is solved, this is why I have stopped responding to emails . . .

And to make things annoyingly worse, as of today Google is forcing the linking of your gmail and youtube accounts. You have to have both to have either (http://www.google.com/support/youtube/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=69964). No opt out option.

So yea, I'm now blocked out of signing in to youtube, too :(

Suddenly google is acting like microsoft with forced bundling . . .

Ok problem went away.

Restarted my PC, and went to this link: https://mail.google.com/mail/

(or google fixed it in the last 10 minutes after I sent them a redirect error report)

Also, deleting cookies didn't work . . .

I have like 5 youtube accounts under 1 email and I can use them all.

Yea but if a hacker gets just one, he gets them all . . . a security flaw in one opens them all up to an attack.
