robot engineer drama series?
« on: December 04, 2006, 11:49:27 AM »
TV depicts people in interesting careers, like doctors in Grey's Anatomy, or lawyers in Law and Order, firefighters and soldiers and the list goes on . . .

I want my engineers drama series!! ok I dont actually watch tv, but still!

Anyone know of any tv series that depicts engineers doing what they do?

Anyone with a plot idea that can capture the masses?

Mythbusters... sorta.

Several of them are robot builders (the guy with the mustache and the beret, and the asian guy).  They have a TV show and use robots on a lot of them.

Alternatively, maybe Junkyard Wars, or series in that genre?

battle bots .... it has engineers doing what they do and then competing with each other.
Gotta love the rear spinning blade.

Was that the one that started with, and had all the line-drawn animations throughout the show?  Sort of a "lines drawn on a slightly yellowish paper" theme?  I think it had two guys on the show, one did almost all the talking.  I remember an episode where they made an audio recording onto a piece of cellophane tape with rust stuck to it.  They also did an emulation of a fax machine with essentially semaphore flags as the data transfer method between the two guys.

I always liked the way Junkyard Wars focused on the builders' creativity. I'd like to see one that did something similar with robots.

found this in my email today from IEEE - basically, its a new reality show . . . about highschool engineering . . .

"Engineering Education Gets Its Own Reality TV Show

Reality television has exploded in popularity over the past few years, introducing everything from survival on a deserted island to ballroom dancing to the private lives of celebrities to our collective consciousness. But can reality TV boost the popularity of engineering? Better still, can it teach engineering principles to a young audience of that notoriously hard-to-reach demographic known as “tweens” (children between the ages of 9 and 12)?

Some believe reality TV can, and to prove the point, the IEEE is providing some of the funds for “Design Squad,” a new half-hour weekly television program. Produced by WGBH Boston in partnership with the sponsors of U.S. National Engineers Week (EWeek), “Design Squad” will use the formula of reality television to introduce children and families to engineering design processes."

Big Bang Theory had one engineer in it but he was not so cool and concentrated on women more then engineering. He did build a robot once.

Thats it to promote the new OSCAR standard we should start recording every moment of people designing modules and clip it together to make our own reality show :)

NOO!!! Not another stupid real-life job reality TV show!! Discovery has really gone down the hole with their shows... deadliest catch was OK, it was a change from normal shows. But then they had the lobster-catching series which was not dangerous at all... and now they have gotten down to a new low with extreme loggers.

Favourite engineering I've ever seen (Besides MacGyver!) is a show called 'Prototype This!' I only saw repeats but it was on the Discovery Channel. They do a prototype of a new engineering challenge ~2weeks. They have build some really amazing stuff like a car which jacks itself up and drives over other cars, an endless water park ride, human airbags. Also see wiki

Exactly!....i used to LOVE discovery channel...its the only channel i watch actually...(although as a kid i had like 5 channels and discovery wasnt one of them  :'()...the only shows i watch from discovery now is mythbusters, how Its made and sometimes daily plant.  I agree that theyve gone down the drain completely with their new shows....even deadliest catch i think is stupid....i mean who has time to waste watching a bunch of complaining people fish for crabs?...or watch people chop down trees....even the one show...destroyed in seconds....looked cool for like 10 minutes, then i was bored....plus all the videos are like youtube quality...i mean ill just go to youtube if i want to see something explode...or ill blow something up myself  ;D.  Also, Im not sure if this was ever on discovery (i think i has to have been)...but what ever happened to popular mechanics and pm for kids?... theres also that show about moving buildings....again, kool for one episode to see how they manage to do it...then its boring...maybe its just me?...
