Title: Giger, now with guns
Post by: Admin on April 18, 2010, 08:19:31 PM
I spoke to the guy who made this, he said he spent $10k to make it. He's been working on it for over a year now . . .

Agreed... 10K?  Are you sure?  Is it made of unobtanium?   ???  It's cool, if it only did more stuff...

Yeah, I agree about the price, did he by any chance uh... Have every part laser cut then finished off with a waterjet? With some better gaits that thing could be pretty damn awesome!

Well for a start, each servo cost $300.

And he probably had several prototypes until he got it right, meaning he had to pay several times for watercutting.

There is a quality wireless camera inside the chest, too.

Why use 300 dollar servos?  Would cheaper servos work just fine?  Wait 10K? For a second I though it was 1K.  I could see that.  But still, I'm not saying anything bad about it, but what is it's main point?  Besides looking cool?  I'll admit it looks to be VERY well put together, and the parts are VERY well made, but what's the point of building a robot if not to DO something?

Ok now that's cool!  Is that the same bot?  Looks much different.  Well, chest up it does.  It also walks (well shuffles) much faster now.  I like it!

It's very cool, the price is high because he has 6 of these: http://www.crustcrawler.com/motors/RX64/index.php?prod=67 (http://www.crustcrawler.com/motors/RX64/index.php?prod=67)
8 of these: http://www.crustcrawler.com/motors/RX28/index.php?prod=66 (http://www.crustcrawler.com/motors/RX28/index.php?prod=66)
10 of these: http://www.trossenrobotics.com/dynamixel-ex-106-robot-actuator.aspx (http://www.trossenrobotics.com/dynamixel-ex-106-robot-actuator.aspx)

For the last one

Keep in mind that he is an employee of Trossen Robotics, so he probably got a 10% discount off everything . . .
