some server-side changes to SoR
« on: June 09, 2011, 10:02:28 PM »
I've changed the DNS for SoR to use CloudFlare.

Supposedly it'll result in faster downloading of SoR through caching . . .

It also acts as another hacker defense, blocking hacker bots . . . SoR gets thousands of failed hack/spammer attack hits per day, so this should add another defensive layer so they won't pwn us.

Anyway, let me know if you have problems, or notice faster loading times!

This is probably an isolated incident but I got an error just a minute ago!
I've attached a screen shot of the error.

Even though I don't *think* the problem is at my end, just to be sure:
I use Firefox 4.0.1
I had only two SoR tabs open, both both had the error
The error occurred at (approx) 2:28PM (Time zone: GMT +8 hours) Sun, 12th June '11
Don't know what else to put in but I'm sure I can find more.

hmmmmmm it's possible the server for my host went out temporarily, so CloudFlare wasn't able to reach it. No way for me to really know . . . I did however notice the site hanging on several occasions yesterday.

Keep me updated!

Another thought . . . if it happens again, see if the main site is working fine but the forum is down.

The forum isn't cached as it requires database lookups, but the main site should still work even when my host is down because of the caching. This will let us know if it's CloudFlare or my host that's causing the problem.

It was just a couple of seconds.
About 10 seconds later I opened up a new tab and it loaded the forum Main page fine  ???

Will do!

Good news: my logs indicate that the main site has been sped up a good deal, especially for those in Europe and Asia.
SoR is now defended against DOS attacks, and against known bots.

Bad news: the spam getting through SoR defenses hasn't changed :-X
