voltage regulator help please, appreciated
« on: October 23, 2008, 08:35:41 PM »
i just purchased a picaxe MCU and need to make a voltage regulator circuit so i believe. ive seen the schematic on the site and understand it all besides the part of the switching regulator im going to be running 2 12v dc motors 3 servos and 1 dc motor <=12v. I wasnt sure if the switching regulator is necessary and/or had anything to do with the motors sensors and so on besides the voltage limit and also im not sure what to look for in a switching regulator ie: amp limit etc. if someone could please explain id appreciate that and it would help me out alot!

Hello,

12V motors are controlled by which motor driver ?
other motor is controlled by which motor driver?
Any link to the motors? ( both of them)

What you could do is use a 12V source and use one switching regulator to bring it down to 5V and make sure the regulator can provide upwards of 5A ( being safe) . Also your battery is pretty hefty - which one are you using

Btw I know admin or someone else is going to scream at me for using regulated power for servos but the truth is that if your regulator can provide more amps than all the servos drawing at stall torque - then you're fine.

also , may I ask what you are building ?

i am building a line following robot that collects golf balls sorts and distributes them in their given goals. as of now i have a dual hbridge ic not sure the power rating on that and havent chose the battery as of yet but the motors are VERY similar to these http://www.jameco.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?jameco_page=42&langId=-1&productId=161382&catalogId=10001&freeText=161382&storeId=10001&search_type=jameco&ddkey=http:StoreCatalogDrillDownView as of now im in the design phase of it, and havent really taken any classes dealing with electronics besides BASIC concepts and such.

edit: the motors are going to be controlled by an HBridge to either basic stamp or the picaxe havent made up my mind yet and i was thinking PWM to control speed from the MCU and the servos will never reach their stall tourque i dont think they wont be doing very strenuous things
any recommendations to that?

oh ok I see
as for H bridges to use and the like - search the forum

use my power regulator suggestion in the previous post
