Your best bet for a diy programmer would be parallel interfaced, read this:

WOW that's simple!
I might make one of those just to have lying around...

Serial port version, if you have a serial port on your PC motherboard instead of a parallel port: http://circuitgizmos.com/wordpress/?p=452 (http://circuitgizmos.com/wordpress/?p=452)

Meh, the serial version is way more complicated ;D

I used one of the parallel port programmers up until i got my stk500 ;D

The parallel programmer (any of the four types) is very easy to assemble, and very inexpensive. For someone on a limited budget that has a PC/laptop with a parallel port, this is a great way to get into microcontrollers. About $5 (or less) for a programmer, and about $5 (or less) for an AVR.
Great way to start learning about microcontrollers.
