Title: Cell Phones and Robotics

Let me start by stating that a) I'm a complete newby at robotics (hello everyone!) so if my question is in the wrong place... sorry :) and b) this is such an awesome hobby I cannot wait to build my first robot.

So to the question...; I have a number of old cellphones lying about. Could they not be used in place of the microprocessor thingy? It just seems to me that they have all the necessary bits and pieces including a screen. And since they've been programmed once already to a cellphone, could they not be re-programmed?

Sadly, not really... If they are old phones most likely not :-\
If they are palm pilot type things and can run an os then its a different story, but for old cellphones then no.
most microcontrollers/processors found in old electronics cant be reprogrammed...

and working with a micro controller that small would be extremly hard and not to mention nearly impossible to solder for some one who has not done alot of soldering before.

what? he meant interfacing with it, without taking it apart.

That's an assumption on your behalf - he never said anything about how he wanted to use it, but he mentioned the chips within.
