Not compatible with 64 bit computers! Get with the times man!

Well sounds fun, can't try it out though.

Madsci, you'll probably have to run it in 32 bit Windows XP mode.
If you have a problem with that, get backward compatible!

Madsci, you'll probably have to run it in 32 bit Windows XP mode.
If you have a problem with that, get backward compatible!

:-\ Did you not think I would have tried that? It seems it's a 16bit program, there is no mode for running that on a 64 bit OS.

And don't attempt to justify the issues as something the end user needs to fix. It's been well over a decade since the general computing platform has moved to 32bit, any software suite that has not recompiled for 32bit by now either no longer has developers or has no decent developers. There is no logical reason to hold back progress, or to further bog down modern OS with emulators to continue support because of these old programs.

Over half of all Win 7 computers in the world are 64 bit. So you are writing a game that a very large portion of your audience can't enjoy.

I've read somewhere that 32 bit compatibility mode with Vista/7 is not really compatible.

It works on my computer fine(32bit), and it is 32bit.
It does, however, NOT work when you have multi-boot and the OS you are running is on a drive other than (C:)

You might be able to help me port it, but you would have to download some things.

What errors do you get, too?

I get

Historically, all Windows versions were backwards compatible with the previous bit environment. So 16 bit runs fine for your 32 bit OS, but not my 64 bit.

I took some time and googled. It looks like Game maker is indeed 32 bit (I;m assuming), but has a long history not working with Windows 7. Care to find a fix for your audience?
Title: Re: SoR's New Computer Game!
Post by: voyager2 on August 07, 2010, 08:48:51 AM
I don't think I'll be able to help, as I said I don't have a 64 bit computer, and since i use Game Maker lite I can't use/make plugins for 64bit machines.
I'll try to find something for you though...

Interesting game, I guess you are still working out the many bugs? Lol still I think its gonna get pretty good so don't give up!!

BTW works in win7 32bit, so i guess its just a 64 bit issue

oh and . . . add sound . . . also, moving didn't work on a laptop computer that doesn't have a keypad :P

(pushing numlock didn't work either)
Title: Re: SoR's New Computer Game!
Post by: voyager2 on August 08, 2010, 09:00:49 PM
I thought about flash, but, a flash developer costs $200+ :-\
And I like Game-Makers drag and drop interface ;)

In Version 0.3 I'll fix the numerous bugs.

I'll try to change moving to I K J L.
Firing will still be A & D.

I hope you don't mind Admin but all pictures/sprites are from SoRs banners and pictures...

Why not use the more common wasd for movement and maybe shift/enter/mouse click to fire?
Just my opinion as this is generally what most games use these days...

Hi,

Splash screen spelling error! (it's computer, not computor).

Apart from that. I get a 'bot and two whatever (bacon slices with a bit of string?) that I can take, I can shoot left and right with A and D, T doesn't do anything and when the bacon is gone I can move back and forth and outside the screen, but that's it - gets boring in about 0.3s as is.

I've decided to scrap using SoR pictures for sprites and objects, and have decided to do something like this:

If I do a good story, it could be a nice effect...

They already can port to PSP, but that's only if you win their competitions...
which is really hard...

What about Android? It has been outselling iphone for the past 6 months. Why no mention of an Android App?

That's about the only thing keeping apple in business. iPhones have always been lower quality, less features and less power then competitors for years, not to mention Apple is now more evil then Microsoft ever was, and o yeah, it's a completely closed source system.

Don't get me started on the blatant hypocrisy of Linux users that have iphones.

Your Email address is hidden in your profile summary

its not a pdf its in .chm format (it runs in a console similar to the microsoft help dialogues). in windows it should just open in the viewer without needing and external viewer/reader.

If you havent done it yet you will need to download the JDK (SE) and select the JDK thats bundled with the netbeans IDE (it helps with first time development).

WASD is the standard even if keyboards have arrow keys - that way the right hand is free to use a mouse.

If you are contemplating Java then I've also used Java3D which wraps the DirectX api in a very clever way whereby you don't need to call it yourself. But its not for the faint hearted. Probably overkill anyway as its more for 3D games with texture mapping, animated 3D figures etc. I even added support for the wire mesh figures included in Dark Basic/Game Designer. Its also kind of hard to deploy - as you don't know whether or users have got Java, DirectX, Java3D etc installed - but I may mess about and put up a downloadable demo somewhere.

Hey some of us "adopted" the left hand mouse-right hand num-pad configuration ;)

Now: official notice:

Now is the time to vote for what you want in the SoR computer game!
Puzzles, bosses, cool unlock-ables, cheats, etc...
Remember that theres no point in giving everyone a link to a puzzle and its solution...
That just spoils it if it ends up in the game ;)

The biggest kicker for people here is that Apple BLOCKS robot control apps, while Google has RELEASED SDKs and libraries to control robots. Which would you rather have?

I can easily use my old G1 as a 'robot brain' now thanks to that.

Goodies of Wikipedia:
Quote
Macintosh version

In 2008, Sandy Duncan announced a port of Game Maker for Mac OS X was being developed. The port had undergone many delays due to technical reasons. A version[27] was made available for private beta testing.

On December 4, 2009, YoYo Games' Mac Developer resigned;[28] however, work resumed on January 27, 2010.[29]

On April 14, 2010, a release candidate for the Mac version was released.[30]

On August 11, 2010, YoYo Games released Game Maker 7 for Mac alongside a new Macintosh games hub entitled the YoYo Games AppStore.[31]
[edit] PlayStation Portable version

On 10 March 2010, YoYo Games CEO Sandy Duncan announced a new version of Game Maker that would be coming to the PlayStation Portable system.[32][33] YoYo Games recently held a competition (Competition 05)[34] in which the restrictions resembled those of a PlayStation Portable, and many rumors arose. Eventually, after over three months, an official announcement was made. YoYo Games also has begun a new competition (Competition 06)[35] with restrictions similar to those of a PlayStation Portable.
[edit] iOS Version and controversy

On 24 September 2010, YoYo Games announced they were making an iOS version, compatible with Apple iPod, iPhone, and iPad.[36] On 20 October, they have submitted Skydiver Mach II, their first app to the iTunes store.[37] As of 22 October 2010 (2010 -10-22)[update], the iOS version is not yet available for public use, however, YoYo Games has released information regarding the requirements for Game Maker games running on the platform.

On January 5, 2011, YoYo Games detected a group of hackers that created a decompiler for Game Maker so they can decompile/modify Game Maker games on the Itunes App Store and later the project would allow them to make and publish their own iOS game and bypass YoYo Games. YoYo Games responded by threatening to take action unless their project was terminated. This gathered much controversy as members of the Game Maker Community started to debate whether or not YoYo Games would sue. Nevertheless, YoYo Games's decision remains questionable to the hackers and the members of the Game Maker Community. One of the hackers, "Zach" said he would call off the decompiler project.
[edit] Android Version

The YoYo Games Store also allows users to port to Google Android.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_Maker#Ports_and_other_versions (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_Maker#Ports_and_other_versions)

Guys, does it matter whether it's on Apple or Android??
I'll do both if i can :o ;)
Don't expect to much; i am 12 (happy birthday to me)

Good Work with the game.

If you were to keep going with making games I would switch to java programming.
It is super easy and if you download a program called Alice (alice.org) it willl teach you easy programming and then you can move to Java3D

I can't wait for the final product.

PM me if your interested :)

And I need some robot theme background music, any suggestions?

Not compatible with 64 bit computers! Get with the times man!

Well sounds fun, can't try it out though.

To solve all incompatibilities I use almighty VMWare + XP(x32)  :P

It somehow works on my x64 Win 7.

The world hasn't ended yet hehe ;)

On a more serious note, i plan to release sometime in the next two months (http://smilys.net/computer_smilies/smiley4375.gif)

On another note are any SoR users willing to compose some theme music for me?
So far i've come to the conclusion that Audacity + Electronic keyboard  does-not-equal good music  :P

As before:
Anyone who wants to get a version before every one else, can sign up to be a bug tester!

Yep, the more the better (not so good for file size though :P)

Title: SoR's Computer Game GML mini tutorial
Post by: voyager2 on May 28, 2011, 08:23:01 PM
I really never mentioned much on the random shuffling, so here goes:

In GML code:

Code: [Select]
{
  sound_replace("0",random(3),1,false)
  sound_play(0)
}

sound_replace() replaces sounds inside the game executable with sounds in the game folder.

random() makes a random number, the number inside brackets is the maximum

sound_play() plays the sound, the variable inside the brackets is the name

If there is no music it will return a error message...
Or your computer station will blow up and you'll be shot by Romulans

NEVER EVER TRY TO MAKE A MAZE GENERATOR! EVER!!!
The Horror!  :( The Horror!

I will make some nice spacious forests for you guys to explore, but consider the maze generator stuff a discarded idea!

That Promotional video is I promised is in the pipeline too....
