I actually do have a bug with this forum only. Just have a look at this : (http://img379.imageshack.us/img379/1210/forumbugsiq7.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

you notice the blue question marks ? I only get them on this forum, and it's quite annoying to have to look at the url-link to know if i'll post a new reply at the topic or mark all new posts as read.

Btw, using Safari on MacOs10.5

airman00,
if you look at the attached picture the red box has the number of people in the chatroom currently... (only me)
you are right that it is no longer at the bottom though.

To stay ahead of the hackers (or at least try to), I just upgraded the forum again today.

You guys know the drill: report anything I broke in the process here. ;D

Only 6 days, and it already says "Spammers stopped by MOD httpBL: 2025".

Unfortunate that ~5 still got in within that time . . .

Just visited with my android phone. Had to get past some math questions, and it took two tries.

Is that what you installed?

Yea. It basically keeps track of IPs that have done things only a spam bot would do within the last X days. I set it to like ~40 days.

I checked the logs, and saw that you used two different IPs that had both done something 'bad' two weeks ago. I also determined two other users to be definitely infected with something . . .

Something bad? My at home ISP rotates address every few days. In fact I can force a new IP by restarting my modem.  My cell phone is what got me the math quiz. From what i understand, the IP of a cell phone rotates quite often, and because of this spammers use cell networks for no good.

There was a news article on how wikipedia wants to ban the whole Verizon network form making edits because of this.

Man had to answer another 4 math questions from my cell phone. Hope this works for how annoying it is.

Arg . . . I've been looking at the logs and found several major bugs in the HoneyPot code . . . it triggers when it shouldn't be.

I also saw that it triggered two more times for you, one of the IP addresses was a spammer two days ago, and another 3 days ago. I think this phone IP address thing is really messing up the HoneyPot . . .

Four more spammers got passed it today, so it's not even doing it's job properly :-\

Anyway you can code it to check IP address and user account? Then if the user has say >50 posts, it would never trigger the honeypot?
Title: Re: forum upgrade problems, found a bug?
Post by: rbtying on December 06, 2010, 07:59:23 PM
Honeypot triggers from my school network - maybe make established institutions' IPs on a whitelist?
Title: Re: forum upgrade problems, found a bug?
Post by: Admin on December 06, 2010, 08:28:38 PM
Unfortunately I have no control over the HoneyPot. It only causes you 'problems' if you use an IP address that was used to relay spam.

I'll give it a few more weeks, and if it causes much more problems than it solves, I'll disable it.

Not that I've had any problems or anything, just curious...

Actually, now I can't log into chat!

yea I saw that too . . . anyone know how long that error has been there?

It seems to work despite that bug . . .

I've been waiting for the final SMF forum 2.0 version to be released, and then I'll redo the entire forum from scratch, and fix the chat while I'm at it. It's taking them much longer than I thought . . . I'm guessing at least another 3-4 months . . .
Title: Re: forum upgrade problems, found a bug?

It seems to only be generating that error on Chrome. I hardly use chrome, so no idea how long it's been like that.

But no error with firefox, just checked.

I tried to login to chat a minute ago both on Internet explorer and Chrome and they both didnt let me log in. normally I use Internet Explorer and have never had any issues with chat until now.

Maybe i should try FireFox?

Just as a check, and you've probably already accounted for this, but did you log into the forum with that particular browser first before logging into chat?

Yeah, i was logged into the forum on the 3 browsers  before trying chat.
Title: Re: forum upgrade problems, found a bug?

I'm getting the same as Joker94, exactly
Exept i'm using Firefox (latest version) only, do have an ancient version of IE, so i can test on that too...

EDIT: A thought just occurred to me, maybe Australian IP's have been blocked from chat?

And just to be sure, when you click this link (http://www.societyofrobots.com/robotforum/chat/), you get the error as a pop-up or?

To be honest I'm not even sure where to start with fixing this bug, especially since it works on my end lol . . . I might just let chat suffer until the forum upgrade, then I'll do a fresh install with the latest versions of everything.

Here's a screen shot for you (attached) using the link from your previous post.
I get the "You can't log into chat" even if I press "log in"
My password has been removed for security ;)

The same happens with my bookmark, and the forum link in the news bar.

In the mean time for anyone who can't log into chat, I set up http://gabbly.com/http://www.societyofrobots.com/ (http://gabbly.com/http://www.societyofrobots.com/)

I looked into it further, and it appears it's a permissions issue. I suspect the latest forum update somehow modified the settings. I'd need to do a complete clean install of the chat system to get it to work, but it's unfortunately a lot of work . . . I'll add it to my list of things to do . . .

Easy solution : move work bench away from snowing monitor

Hard solution : Turn off javascript

I found a bug. Every time I sign in to this forum I see this scroll bar down the screen appears and starts flickering. I don't even know where this scroll bar came from. This only happens in this forum. It doesn't happen in any other sites.

it is definitely something JavaScript related.
that's why i thought is was the snow effect. i presume snowflakes are getting drawn outside the displayed screen area.
(and yes, turning JavaScript off the snow and the weird scrollbar go away.)

A list of all the mods I'm willing to install:
http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/ (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/)

This forum is currently v1.1.15, although sometimes older mods will still work. I will change over to v2.0.1 when I have time, which has an entirely different set of mods.
