Atmega8 chip 8kb - N/A

Hey there,
For the $50 robot tutorial, the chip is the Atmega8 chip 8kb or 16kb..
I ordered the chip 3 weeks ago on Futurlec.com.au and now they tell me that they no longer sell or have the Atmega8 chip 8kb or 16kb... I'm from Australia.. is there anywhere else that sells the chip ? I have everything else except the chip now.

Digikey has quite abit in stock, try them.

Just for the record:

ATMega8 is always 8kb (it is no longer manufactured. So if you can find them then the price can be high)
ATMega168 is always 16kb (it is no longer manufactured. So if you can find them then the price can be high)
The ATMega328P is the 32kb replacement. But due to demand it can be hard to source.

All 3 are direct plug-in replacements ie you can swap any one for any of the others.

The Futurlec website shows the first two of these being available in the PDIP28 package.

If their website is useless and says stuff is in stock and it isn't then perhaps you should give them a call to find out what they actually have in stock. Tell them about your woes and waiting for weeks and, who knows, they may send you a freebie

There is application note to replace ATmega8 with ATmega88.

notes: ATmega88 is not designed to be a replacement for ATmega8, but is pin compatible and has a very similar feature set. Maybe there are other replacement better alternatives

Note that the picture for this is the wide 28 pin DIP. That is incorrect. It is the narrow 28-pin DIP. Rows of pins .3" (7.6 mm) apart.

There is nowhere good in Australia which sells Microcontrollers Jaycar occasionally sell some PIC or AVR stuff but its pretty expensive, ATmega 168's were about $20 a pop. My favourite online stores are farnell and Sparkfun. Farnell is cheaper and has free shipping in Australia, Sparkfun have a lot more hobby stuff and a nicer website.
