Title: Need to hinge two flush surfaces (but not how you'd think) Pics included
Post by: corrado33 on November 02, 2009, 02:59:11 PM
Ok guys, I'm having a bit of trouble.  I've included a few pictures to go along with this post.  First of all, the blue area in the pictures is the body of my robot, and the pink/red/light pink thing is the holder for my PDA.  I want it to hinge up so that I can easily remove my PDA if I need to, except I can't figure out the hinge.  Obviously there's going to be a gap between the holder and the body of the robot, but that isn't incorporated in my CAD drawing.  So here are the pictures.

Pic 1.

This is the body with the holder closed.  From the side.  (Some side panels are hidden)

Again another pic with the holder closed.  As you can see the top is flush with the body.

Top view of both.

This is how I want the holder to open.  (Or something like it)  The problem is that this wouldn't be possible, as the body and holder are overlapping at the top left hand corner of the holder.

Another view of holder open.  As you can see the holder's hole is easily accessible for me to remove my palm.

I plan on holding this "door" shut with some magnets.  (Yes I know aluminum isn't magnetic, I'm making holders then just putting circular magnets in them.)  If you have any better ideas for holding the door shut please let me know.  I'm planning on having a spring to hold it open (but not prevent it from keeping closed.)

Here is a link to the sketchup file.

EDIT:  I just realized it doesn't have to rotate.  I could simply push the whole holder up.  That'd probably be a little easier.  Let me know what you think.

Yeah that's probably easier... I have one idea for that...
Attached picture.
RED=phone
GREEN=phone holder
BLACK=body
The phone holder would have a spring underneath it with some kind of spring loaded release on the top that you push over to allow the holder to pop up.

You can make a hinge similar to this:

Those types of hinges are made for the hinged flush surfaces (that hinge in the picture is for a RC airplane hatch)

Ah ha!  I knew there were hinges like that, I just couldn't find them.  Those look like they'll be perfect.  Anyone know a good place to find them?  I did a quick mcmaster search and couldn't come up with anything.  (And by quick, I mean like a full minute...)

Thanks so much guys.

The link was in the picture...
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=8230&Product_Name=Hatch_Hinge_27x10.5mm_(10pcs) (http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=8230&Product_Name=Hatch_Hinge_27x10.5mm_(10pcs)) $1.49 for a 10 pack...
but damn, is their searchbar broken or something, it wouldn't let me search so i had to manually go through 11 pages of hinges to find it :-\

Thanks smash!  BTW, are you really only 14?  Or are Australian years kinda like dog years?  So that'd make  you... 98?   ;)  BTW I ordered those hinges and some more heavy duty looking ones. I mean for less than a buck for a pack... you really can't go wrong.
