need high speed cameras
« on: June 28, 2010, 03:38:14 PM »
Our experiments at work require two high speed cameras . . . well unfortunately one of them fried after ~10 years of use . . . luckily it was only like ~$7k (sarcasm).

So I'm in the market for a new one, and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations. I of course can find a bunch on Google, but with all the marketing I can't tell which camera is actually decent . . .

required specs:
minimum 100fps, but 200fps+ is better
black/white or color (doesn't matter)
absolute maximum budget at $10k
manual focus . . . filming stuff between 2-3 feet away
at least some low-light capability . . . filming stuff underwater in my basement lab ;D
size/weight doesn't matter
minimum 640x480 resolution

That said, I'm also looking for a high speed camera for personal usage. Required minimum 60fps and no more than $200 . . . anyone know of any?

My brothers phone shoots in 120fps, awesome fun, it was cheap to, like 150€ a few months ago  :D not much resolution though.

it's the LG viewty lite.

Hmmm decent! Only 320x240, but good auto-brightness . . .

I was going to buy the exilim, but i wanted it more for photography, and i already have a compact, so i'm going for either a panasonic FZ-38(bridge) or an entry level DSLR.

By the way, the new dslrs can film, some in 60Fps, in HD  :) not sure which models though, i can't find the video i saw the other day.

I was aware that cypress semi had some ultra high fps CMOS sensors... but not cameras....

I assume that what you do, isn't done in a repetitive manner... Cause you could get away with a strobe light.... ;-)
For whom the interrupts toll...

Nope, won't work:
A) filming something inside a glass tank filled with water - light reflection would be horrible
B) I need to see full motion, not a freeze frame or frequency measurement
C) I have a programmable strobe light already :P
D) The movement frequency ranges from 0.5Hz to 4 Hz - too slow for a strobe to be useful
