Broadcast Radio Frequency easily?

Is there some simple circuit I can build to just broadcast whatever RF I want useing something like a 555 Timer, some resistors, pots, capacitors, random coil of wire, etc?

And is there an easy way to pick it up and have the MCU do something when it picks up on that RF?

I dont even care if it carries actual data(yet!) I just want to output and pick up on a freq for now... any help? links perhaps?

Most radio controllers etc use a crystal to generate the frequency.
When i was about 8 or 9 i had one of the basic electronic sets that are quite common these days. This included instruction on how to make a simple transmitter with a variable capacitor, and a coil. You could try googling for some instruction books for beginner electronics sets and im sure that they all have pretty similar applications to build

the easiest way to pick up the transmitted signal is with a diode detector circuit(google it) (for AM signals).

What type of transmision do you want AM,FM,PM, etc..
FM modulation with a tone decoder on the reciever side is realativly easy.

You can also buy IC's that are used for signal transmission or reception.

Also any RF communication circuit you design will probably need a fair bit of tuning to actually get it to work properly (Thats why using FM with a tone decoder is nice as it require much less tuning).

Well to be honest I dont have an exact situation that I would really want to use it yet but some of the ideas ive been coming up with would benefit from sending at least an 8bit signal or something to a receiver of some sort... I guess it was a bad idea to ask if I dont know exactly what I wanted yet >_< Sorry guys, jumped the gun

Im gunna study this little wireless doorbell thingy ive got laying around to see if I can figure out how it works and more importantly how I can tune it to output different frequencies....

I found this tutorial and I was wondering if you guys think it would be a good place to start....
I think for now all I want to do is press a button on the xmitter and have an LED on the receiver light up... just until I actually learn how to fully take advantage of how to use it: http://tacashi.tripod.com/elctrncs/smplfmtr/smplfmtr.htm


The only thing though is that this is to xmit sound from a microphone... can I use this same circuit and mod it to work for what I want it to?
