I bought a 36 pin breakaway male header and according to the 5 dollar robot tutorial you need more but on the supplies it said 36.

If you want, you will only need to use 36!

Only solder them in where you need them ,there is no need to have them at every I/O pin there is because for the $50 robot you will only need 2 out and 2 in

unless you start customizing it !!

here I have attatched a quick photo. If you are just doing the simple photovore robot, you will need the green ones, If you don't plan on doing any more you wont need the red ones.

If you plan on upgrading to sonar or IR or customizing it, you will want to keep all of the pins or order the more headers, but for now only the green ones will be needed, and you can add the othere ones at a later date providing that you leave room for them ;)

NOTE: my programmer is the avrisp2 and that is 6 pin, if you got the other one, yours will be 10 pin (in yellow)

its worth the extra $.50 to use all the ports you can.
If you don't plan on doing any more you wont need the yellow ones.
what? then how will you program the robot?

sorry typo, I meant to say red... Will edit ;)

But if he wants to just go ahead on the robot without having to deal with waiting for the headers to be shipped in, those are the only one he needs for right now. And he can always add more when he gets the headers

I may be mistaken, but I think you've marked the battery pins red. It would seem to me that those pins are essential to the functioning of the board.
Think outside the box... inside is to crowded.

you "could" solder the wires of a battery clip onto the board where the pins were....

If you just have wires coming out of the battery pack, you can just solder those into the board! no need for headers.

If you have extras, just use them for more i/O pins!(what is in red)

i don't recommend soldering the wires from your battery pack to the board but instead some scrap wires that you can
twist in with the packs wires, this lets you be able to recharge the pack..

He is using a double A battery holder not a rechargeable battery pack.
