cheap battery chargers
« on: January 31, 2008, 04:07:01 PM »
This battery is a 10-cell 12Volt NiMH battery http://www.onlybatterypacks.com/showitem.asp?ItemID=11074.37
12v 10,000mah 10 cell NiMH D Block Pack
Cell: 10,000mah D
Discharge rate: 20amps
Wire: 22ga, 14/16ga on larger connectors
Size; L 6.25" x W 2.40" x H 2.54"
Weight; 47oz.

I want to pick out an optimal, semi-cheap battery charger for it given the specs. I believe the 10-cell 12 v, 10,000 mah are the limiting features for picking a battery charger that works right?

This battery charger will work but it's expensive:

$118.00

If money is an issue, why not get this instead?

I plan to buy the 6V version of this in a week or so . . .

btw, the battery you linked us to is 12V, not 10V ;)

This one only charges -Charges packs from 1000mah to 4500mah. My battery is rated at 100,000mah.

hmmm good point . . . ignore my last post ;D

Well, another possible option is to get two 4500mAh batteries and put them in parallel (just an idea). This is actually what I will be doing.

I don't think you will find very many chargers that can do 10k mAh . . .

i also use 10Ah NiMH D cells on my bot.
i haven't been able to find a particularly good charging solution as yet.

the charger i'm currently using is similar to the first link Vidam posted.
it's not ideal because after a charge it drops to a trickle charge of 100mA which is pretty pointless on a 10Ah pack. (the one in Vidams link trickle charges at 250mA which is a little better but still less than ideal.)

i think i'll have to give up and build one which kind of sucks because i'd rather be building the robot.
my ideal charger would sense battery voltage and quick charge the pack @3A up to about 13.5V then drop to about 700mA and trickle charge at that level indefinitely.
that way i could have the bot drive into it's charging station and start charging without human intervention.
