Title: robot t-shirts
Post by: Admin on July 23, 2006, 01:59:09 PM
I am thinking of designing and making high quality robot related t-shirts offered on this site . . . anyone think this a good idea, or have t-shirt ideas?

Shirts will have semi-funny semi-geeky things on them, like:

"Actively making humans obsolete."
"Building giant robots to battle aliens."
"You wont laugh when my robots take over the world."
"When I replace your body with robot parts, Ill let you keep your brain . . . in a jar."
"My wife is a robot."

Stuff like that . . . thoughts? My target cost is under $20, including shipping.

The Segway some EEs at my college built has this kickass sticker on it.  It's a black sticker with yellow text that says "Robots WILL kill you!".

I think an image of a mass of robots marching on Washington with picket signs saying "Repeal the 3 Laws!" or some variant thereof would be kinda funny too.

Then (not really a shirt idea, just something funny that is robot related), one of my friends has this quote on his facebook profile:
Person 1: So, what's your robot do?
Person 2: It collects data about the surrounding environment, then discards it and drives into walls!
  :D

How many of you guys have played Valve's "Portal" game?

I've played the flash 2d version of it.

can't afford the 3d version :D

That's a shame.  Orange box is the best game investment you can make imo.  A bunch of great games plus access to the plethora of free Source engine mods.  Anyway, back on topic.  I'm thinking of a design with the Lost in Space robot in it, I'll flesh it out during class tomorrow and post ideas later.

"One day, robots will take over the world...
... and I'll be building them!"

I've seen a bunch on CafePress.com... Maybe you should just upload them there...

So actually, I was talking to a friend last night about T-shirts.

I want to have one made before April to wear at this robot contest.

A shirt would make a good 3rd place prize for the SoR contest, too, no?

Anyway, my friend said she will look into some design ideas.

Ill have it up by March I promise!

Since I was always too busy (lazy) to ever find time for this, Asellith went and set up a shirt shop for SoR (thanks dude!):

http://www.cafepress.com/societyofrobots
(you can find a link to it on the main page as well)

As of the moment, 15% of the price goes to SoR - helps pay my premium server costs, tutorial parts costs, contest prizes, advertising costs, etc.

If anyone is seriously interested in buying a shirt, but don't like the current designs, feel free to post what you'd like to see!

Hmmmm good question, I had to look it up myself:
http://www.cafepress.com/cp/info/help/processes.aspx#dprint
They use a process called 'Direct Printing'

btw, forgot to mention I added a vote to this thread

I have a shirt from cafepress REALLY nice shirts. Good quality print job. doesn't flack off or crack. They have different quality depending on what shirt you buy but the one I got is a standard hanes T-shirt that is of good quality.

I bought a hat from Cafepress embroidered with "24tooth.com" logo (Lego Robotic Group of Ann Arbor), very nice hats and t-shirts.

the design looks too plain for me
I'm no artistic guy , so sadly I can only say if its good or bad , I don't know how to fix it.

hey now I'm an engineer not an artist :) So is admin thats why I tried to copy the artistic style in the website. and Admin canned my baby outfit with the logo and "future robot builder" on it. :) If you have better ideas let me know and we can modify the images on the shirts. I personally will buy the polo shirt someday when I remember and have the extra funds for it.

hmmm
better designs.....

Heres a few "types" of Tshirts that we might consider:
(http://media.threadless.com/product/1023/view1.jpg)   xcept with robots on it
Sketchy style  http://www.threadless.com/product/1461/Modern_Kangaroos  have a robot with

What I really want to see happen is some Tshirt with a cartoony drawing and underneath some clever words - what would be cool is if we "rewrote" the 3 laws of robotics , make it some funny laws. Like for example : a robot must not work until the creator has spent hours trying to figure out that the power connector is in backwards"  or osmething like that

I think it is a great idea to sell robot-themed t-shirts; I always wanted a shirt that was somewhat related to robots (but they don't usually sell them at your local Target...).  :P Personally, I think they should have interesting/funny pictures under or above the words (like airman00 suggested), instead of text-only shirts (even engineers/scientists/hobbyists like shirts with some style).  I also like the idea of using them as a prize in your robot contests.  There was a thread a while back that had a funny quote that could work on a shirt; it was something like this:

"We are creating machines that will eventually become Skynet, and you're worried about {insert object here}"

(I do not claim ownership to this quote, all rights belong to its owner).  I thought it was a good robot/Terminator joke.  ;D

P.S.  Off topic for a second, someone mentioned The Orange Box a few posts back; it's quite a wonderful game(s), well worth buying.  ;D

omg! I saw that cartoon on TV this weekend when I was on vacation in San Diego. The only thing I had handy was my phone so I shot a video of it to post on here to ask if there was some relation. Damn you beat me to it. My wife came out of the shower and I was filming the TV screen. She was like wtf are you doing.

Airman00 since you posted and quoted me, modifying my previous post no longer seems the right thing to do. So, I am going to have to double post. Really odd, this forum does not let one delete posts. o.O

Quick Explanation for previous post.  I uploaded this image on a "Free Image Hosting site"... It was De-res'd and was not of quality, so I went bact to the previous post and tried to correct it, I pressed Post instead of Preview(accident) and my post has a "." as a message.  I had to use my own server to host it(Something I avoided to save me time) but it ended up costing me more time in the long run... >_> anyhow....

I laughed really hard at this...

Person 1: So, what's your robot do?
Person 2: It collects data about the surrounding environment, then discards it and drives into walls!

  ^ Just brilliant... and true^

This is an Idea I came up with for the T-shirt.

The line reads: "Most think that the robots we make are to make our lives easier and problem free...They clearly havent meet my robots"

You may access the image directly here if you want to see a better version of it.

this is a collection of all the quotes and some pics around SoR, it is not desighned as a t-shirt because i planned to use this meathod http://www.staples.ca/ENG/Catalog/cat_sku.asp?CatIds=&webid=626205&affixedcode=WW (http://www.staples.ca/ENG/Catalog/cat_sku.asp?CatIds=&webid=626205&affixedcode=WW)
