Title: Atmel ISP MKII Device not connecting
Post by: flubber_butt_2001 on November 12, 2009, 12:33:17 AM
Hi, I'm new here but I'm having some issues with the 50$ robot tutorial at the end. My programmer is lighting up green and I have connected everything to the circuit board that I've created but it seems that the programmer refuses to connect in AVR Studio 4. Could someone please help me with what might be the problem.

Thanks

The error i'm getting occurs when I click the AVR button in AVR Studio and at the top of the pop up window it shows "failed to connect". I have both green lights on the programmer and i checked all my ISP to IC connections and they're correct and nothing is shorting together.

Is your chip getting warm? If so, your connection could be backwards, just flip the cable around. This solved it for me when I had this issue.

I have build the board few months ago.

Things I did not do but fixed it:
          1.  Important to power your board first then plug the ISP;  and
          2.  Try another USP from your computer.

Do not gave up.  It never works the first time for me.  Took me a long time to solve it and I was too shy to post

What version of AVR studio?  I know they fixed some similar issues in 4.17

there are two LED's on the programmer. one inside near USB socket and one sticking out the top near ribbon cable. The LED near USB will light green when connected to computer and the other LED near ribbon cable will light green when it receives power from your circuit board and if everythings ok, else it will be red when there is no power from circuit board.

Download the latest version of AVR Studio and it will probably fix your problem as something similar had happened to me.

This happened to me when I first started using AVR studio.   You might need to install the drivers.  Check your device manager in the control panel-system, see if it says it is working or not.  The drivers for it will be on the disk that came with the ISP device.
