Title: Distance Sensor
Post by: jamiec on August 19, 2010, 12:06:26 PM

Hi There

I know this subject has been quite well cover but i am after a slightly different thing, I am looking for a distance sensor that works a bit like the Sharp short distance sensors but with a much narrower bean ideally 0.5cm -> 1cm does something like that even exist ?

Also it would be good if it worked at 5v as i am using it with a arduino but i sure i can work around it if need

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated

Cheers

James

Hi,

There are LASER sensors, like in a Bosch LASER "measuring tape".
They're not that different from the Sharps, besides using a LASER instead of an LED (and having a much larger range).

I haven't seen just the sensors for sale and the entry level "tape" from Bosch is around $240..$250, but if you're fairly industrious, you might experiment with combining a Sharp and a LASER.

If you only need a short range, perhaps a baffle or two could be used to narrow down the beam, but less light will mean less range.
