Title: sound with steppers
Post by: frank26080115 on October 31, 2007, 07:35:17 PM
so there i was, all bored in computer engineering class, playing with a hard drive that has been recently violently violated with a few screw drivers, it looked kinda like a record player and my thoughts jumped to DJs

What if i wired up the stepper motor to a opamp? i'm hoping from the nature of stepper motors, different spinning speeds can generate a different tone. Think it will work?

if you can get it to run at an audible frequency (several kilohertz, but don't remember the exact frequency range), theoretically yes . . .

have you seen this?

(my roomie from college did this)

Audible frequencies range from around 20 Hz - 15 KHz (young people can often hear to between 20 and 30 KHz, but sensitivity to high frequencies decreases with age).

there's also a good tutorial on how to make a HD speaker on instructables.com
Just search for it, it's pretty easy :)
