Well, there are three files. A .zip with the full game, and two .mtx files for the upgrade patches. You need to use the MTX program to install the patches, but the MTX program hasn't been working for most people (including me).

I've been playing it without the patches. I saw a few bugs, one of them major, but whatever.

On the bright side, the game was very addictive, so now I have a strong enough reason to be productive again :P

(by productive, I mean I've spent the last few hours scanning for viruses and fixing my firewall :-X)

The patches work if you install the game and the patces by opening them in the mtx program but you have to put it in offline mode first or it never gets though to the server to do some checksum

The program just hangs for me, I can't even select anything in the MTX menu . . .

They still won't admit the virus:

I can't tell if the mtx is the virus or not for me. I in a moment of stupidity downloaded a no cd crack because the game wanted a cd before I got the patches installed. That gave me a really nasty virus so after killing that I missed anything mtx might have done. game works great for me.

They also added a ton of content.  New weapons and lots of new mechs. A lot of special tech level 3 stuff from battletech made it into the game. New favorite weapon is the Light PCC with a recharger and capacitor add ons. recycle time is crazy fast and it does 12 points of damage per hit. One good smack from my atlas on a light and some mediums and BOOM :)

The MTX program doesn't have a virus, just the MW4Mercs.exe file. A CD key wasn't needed, even without the patches. I normally scan everything I download before I use it, but I thought a Microsoft sponsored game would at least be infection free . . . I guess I didn't question the torrent well enough . . .

I haven't played Mechwarrior since MW2 came out, a decade or so ago, so everything is different for me :P

That said, my Goliath II has a 60 damage 1000m range 8 second reload railgun :o

I gave every mech on my team a 28 damage cannon (the type that explodes on contact). Whenever a light comes near us, it literally flies across the screen from the kick back. Hilarious . . .

I have to look into the online stuff and see whats thats all about yet. Might be cool to set up some SOR community games some night. The online side is new to the game as far as I remember.

I'd be up for it, or at least supporting it . . . when I'm back in the States, I'll be working hard again so probably shouldn't play games much . . .

They just made a new announcement, emphasizing that NA and McAfee falsely flagged the software:
http://www.mektek.net/index.php?ind=news&op=news_show_single&ide=1148

That said, NA detected 5 copies of it with two different names in my System Restore folder, and 8 more copies of it in my Recycler folder. The detections occurred over a period of 2 days, as if they were activating themselves after a set period of time.

The dataloss was apparently a 'bug' in the software, unrelated to the virus issue. Oops! Don't panic, it'll only happen if you try to patch the software and not follow instructions.

The MTX software not working was apparently also a bug. And their site not working for 2 days was a single server going down, taking out the entire network.

lol

Not sure how to verify what version I have, but I *think* the installation worked:

I just turned off NA so I can finish and beat the game.

Yea, but not sure how to verify the patching actually worked.

It said something like 'Did you patch in the right order?' after each patch upgrade.

Norton cleared it, no virus after all:

Also a new patch.
