I thought it might be fun to have a topic on SoR where we can brag about our foolishness.
Feel free to post some pics here showing injuries you've gotten from working on your robotics projects. Solder-burns, laser-scars, Lithium explosion damage, ... Show it to the people! ;D
You may also show damage to your robots caused by crashes, burns, torpedo's, etc.
Infact just show anything or anyone that got hurt by robotics. :P
In my defense: this is to warn people about the dangers of robots and building them. 8)

i got to post this for admin ;D
a year ago i read that tut and i still remember that

Ahh yes ! ;D
The legendary first voltage regulator (or was it a FET for the motor driver?)
I wish I had taken a pic of my finger when I burnt it a few months ago while soldering.
I wasn't looking, and i wanted to grab the soldering iron fast, but I grabbed a bit too far and I completely grabbed the iron part... :o
Needless too say my hand didn't feel so good for the next days :-\
Some parts of my skin looked like cooked chicken...mmm chicken...but don't worry, I didn't hold it for very long. I released it and while pulling my arm away very fast, I bumped my elbow to the arm of the guy next to me...pretty hard ::)
-
anyone see my butler robot running me over ? i couldn't freakin move!, i was pinned down
and then theres that time i first used a jigsaw ............ lol
-
ya last year i was playing with some old circut board and my hand slipped. all the little sharp things of solder cut my hand and i got 5 stitches
-
it was the h-bridge mosfet ;D
-
In my schools robotics club I managed to get a nice looking scar to match my other(the new one's pink part is an inch long and 1/8 inch thick) there were no bandages so I used duct tape and paper towels to clean it up, and the cut was made of an oily igus rod from BEST. It happened from my hurry and not wanting to look when i literally jumped onto the ground to unplug the battery.
Im not safe :D

I was testing some salvaged DC motors with a friend and hooked them up to a power supply. I forgot and didn't notice that he had switched the adjustment dial to control amperage instead of voltage. So I started turning the dial, thinking I was adjusting voltage to test how fast the motor would go and the motor speed barely increased. I kept turning the dial slowly, thinking "hmmmm this is strange". That's when I saw it was on amperage and just as I started to turn the dial back...
BAAAMMMMMMMMMMMM!
The capacitor wired to the power/ground connectors of the motor BLEW UP. There was cotton/confetti stuff all over the lab table. Luckily neither of us was hit by flying shrapnel, but my ears hurt for a few hours after that. Moral of the story? Check and double check the display!

oooww, electolytic capacitors really stink if you blow them up. The whole room stinks like rotten fish and there's that cotton stuff everwhere :-X ::)

So far I only had one serious burn from the soldering gun... My soldering gun is at my left hand, but despite being a lefty, I used some things better with my right hand... So when I changed hand... I also needed to change skin... I almost grabbed the soldering tip!!!
It was a really bad burn bad there but I had to overcome it because I had volleyball training that day (and when you are in a crush with a girl you can't miss :D - well it didn't turn out well :'( but there are more to come ;) 8)!!! so I'm nice)(and yeah my finger was bad - but it was right hand so never mind!!!)
Some cuts... regular thing... And with a big hope not to have respiratory problem after this long hours of soldering in a not so well ventilated environment....
-
The #1 lesson I learned: Always be afraid of anything that is potentially dangerous, even if you are an expert at it. As soon as you lose the fear, you make dumb decisions.
My list of pain:
Almost cut my thumb off with a bandsaw . . .
Burning my finger with a mosfet, as ed pointed out above
Several near misses of highspeed flying parts hitting close to my eyes
Poorly secured parts in a drill press spinning and hitting me
List of pain from my friends:
Electrocution, several times . . .
Almost cutting various fingers off with a bandsaw, needing stitches
(I remember following a trail of blood to find my friend)
Capacitors exploding in the face (mostly smoke and noise)
Exploding L298 motor driver (pretty colors!!!)
Battery acid burns (resulted in him taking his pants off)
Long metal fragment passing through a thumb (through the fingernail, too)
Sulfuric acid spill (resulted in him stripping to his boxers)
Tips:
Wear safety goggles - always. I wear them when I solder, cut leads off of boards, machine, use chemicals, even when I turn on a new circuit for the first time. You only have two eyes.
When using chemicals, do it outside or in a very ventilated area. I also vent my solder fumes (lead poisoning!). Read the safety manuals before using the chemical.
Tie down flammables and store in cool safe locations.
Read the manual for your power tools before using them. No loose clothing. Make sure you always have someone close by if something goes horribly wrong. People cutting off fingers is actually fairly common with power tools . . .

Important Tip:
Never solder directly to a lead acid battery!!!!

Never solder directly to a lead acid battery!!!!
Did you have an incident? I've done it a few times no problem. There is a post in this forum about it if you search a bit.

The cell is fine and there was no fire. My friend de-soldered the leads from the battery for me. But he was very apprehensive doing it.
Soldering heat will fry the cell and may cause your house to burn down. To avoid this danger please use solder tabs using spot welds.

This didn't happen to me, but i once heard about a guy who cut his finger off with a circular saw.
What happened was the lights in the room were powered by 50Hz AC electricity and the saw must have been rotating at a multiple of 50 revolutions per second. This caused the strobe effect where the saw looked stationary. The guy thought, thats weird... it sounds like its on... so he touched it and chopped his finger off!

You best note this with TV's and TFT's in the dark... I've never noticed this with regular lamps... Must have been the tube lamps we have at bathrooms!!! :P
Poor guy though... :-[

I learned to never solder in shorts.
Was soldering and drop the iron, I was worried about catching the carpet on fire and it hit my bare leg. The bad part was it stuck to my leg and I had to rip it and several layers of skin off. So don't weed whack or solder in shorts :)
-
1- spilled batery acid over myself and didnt know about it till i got to wally world and saw bunch of holes in my pants (wearing them now ;D )
2- inhaled ALOT of toxic fumes (pretty much anything you can think off)
3- the generic burns/cuts\
might think of more stuff later
-
might think of more stuff later
maybe some memory damage to? ;)
-
lol. that comes with the inhaling of substances
-
Ive cut myself pretty badly once or twice, soldered my fingers several times, impaled my fingers with ICs (once had an entire 555 stick completely into my friggen index finger... Then my nose started flashing on and off, dunno what that was about. :P
Oh and ive crushed my hands, fingers, knuckles, etc >_<
-
Oh and ive crushed my hands, fingers, knuckles, etc >_<
Judging by your sig, that's not the only thing that was crushed...
Sorry ;) , I couldn't leave it
-

Oooh, that's the worst burn you can get. LOL
Too funny
-
I just remembered another injury i almost had.
I was in my schools physics lab with my physics teacher attempting to figure out the thurst of a outrunner motor with a 5 inch computer fan. He supposedly clamped it, told me to put it on full power, as soon as I did it shot off the clamp hit the table and two blades shot behind my head, another shot into his computer, and the other two were never found.

i dont get it. are you talking about his sig getting resized?
-
they are talking about the picture in his signature, it got smaller
-
they are talking about the picture in his signature, it got smaller
uuhm... Do I suck at telling jokes, or do you suck at understanding them? :P
I meant his head had been crushed too...
-
it's the fumes :P
from now on everything is gonna get blamed on them
-
hahahaha poor fumes... the jerks... they made me forget my lunch money the other day...
-
robots are outsmarting humans, its aleady happening!!! :o
Before we give them the slightest technology they are killing are brains with fumes, drawing our blood with tools, burning us, becoming suicide bombers, attempting to commit suicide thus causing us to try and fly to their aid most commonly resulting in an injury to us, and becoming very confusing very fast.
now what will happen when they can actually think.... :-\

Goddamned, you're right!
We keep joking about robots taking over the world someday, but it's already well on it's way :o
Our robots are just smart enough to avoid an obstacle, and they already beat the crap out of us...
ahh well, let's make some more!
-
It's all right. It's the cycle of life. We make robots. They kill us. They get bored. They make humans. The Terminator 3 movie occurs. Humans kill robots. They get bored. They make... female androids? Hehe
-
hahaha garri... so true :P
-
Maybe I should write a book about that? Fahrenheit 452? LOL ;D
hahaha garri...
And there goes my name, oh well.
-
hahahaha lol ok my injuries...
1.soldering iron fell into shoe and burnt me for about 4 seconds...owch
2.nail went through finger and nail....
3.i shocked myself with a tazer attached to a rc car...
4.my battery exploded in my face...was examining y it wasnt working...
5.soldered hands..i dropped soldering gun then tryed to catch it.... ended up throwing it tho.. :D
6.cut bit of hand open inbetween pointer and thumb......
7.and finally my foot got crushed by a 450 kg robot.....
and im freakin 12! can u imagine the rest of my life!
now it gets me thinking of suiside..... ;D
-
wow that sounds like nothing comparde to my minor burns. I'm twelve also
-
This is my most memorable and most funny. These stories almost always start off with a "why the heck did he do that" moment.
I was at my workbench, barefoot, soldering together a board. I started to get tired and frustrated because, to be honest, I suck at soldering. Rather than use the nice stand that came with the iron, I laid it down on the workbench just for a second while I grabbed another component. Somehow between the time I grabbed the component and the time I was supposed to grab the soldering iron off the workbench, I laid the side of my hand right on top of the iron. I heard sizzling, yanked my hand back, jumped up and down because of the pain.
Because my workbench is in the garage, there happened to be a thatching rake leaned up against the shelving behind me. As I was reeling from the pain of my burn, I stepped back right onto the tines of the rake making three deep punctures in the bottom of my foot. To add insult to injury, the rake pivoted under my weight and smacked me in the back of the head.
The emergency room doctor actually started laughing at me as she was stitching me up...asked if I needed my head examined... :-\
-
soldering at 2 in the morning, held the solder in my mouth to solder, when i soldered the moisture from my toung made the solder boil and i cought a peice of solder in the cheek...
2 hours (4AM) later I accidently grabbed the wrong part of the soldering iron... woops!
-
ummm lead poisoning :o
-
You actually got lead poisoning? Don't you die from that? :o
-
i think he means me from holding my solder in my mouth... i cant help it, sometimes those 3rd hand tools arnt enough, you need 4 or 5... lol
-
LOL thats funny ;D
-
Everyone in the robotics club at my school bet on what will kill me, im still leaning on the side of some fiery explosion shaking the block, or be cut almost in half, one of the two :-\
and just 20 mins a go i sizzled my pointer on my soldering iron, now its white..... and 2 hours before that i cut myself with a screwdriver.....
-
i think you should call it a night ;D
-
haha lol yea enough for one day ;D
-
nahhhh, its not a night until you have a rip saw carve your hand into pretty shapes... now if youll excuse me, Im calling it a night
just kidding :)
-
lol most people arent scared off the workspace until they injure themself or someone tries to kill them with a rake cleverly place on the ground....anyone remember the ep of simpsons with bob and the rakes XD major LOL
-
it sounds familiar but I cant picture it in my head... but yeah ive hurt myself a lot in the past and im very very not afraid of my workspace :)
-
you sir are a brave man! 8)
-
How do you cut yourself with a screwdriver??? :o LOL
Did you like keep spinning it on your hand to see if it would bleed? OR did it slip off (I have no idea how) and rip through your skin?
-
not electric screwdriver ,
those things are sharp man! If you are turning something wilth a lot of force and it slips....... :'(
-
I'm so sad I haven't had that privilege. Yet. ;D
Well, be careful and kids remember, don't talk to stranger robots or tools.
sorry I had to squeeze that in. :D
-
I have cut myself tons of times with screwdrivers. And I just had the new experience of shocking myself with a 320 volt capacitor. ;D
-
did it hurt or did it just feel all tingly ???
-
it hurts. alot.
once i took one to school and by lunch i had accidently shocked myself 5 times. IDk what volts, but it was from a camera. couldnt move my thumb for teh rest of the day
-
I took a camera apart and used the flash assembly. umm yeah, it hurt....alot.
-
lol thats how you make homemade tasers! :D
-
i know..i saw that article and shocked my friend in the movies...everyone yelled out shut up to him ;D

Oh speaking of drills and screw drivers and such, I had to fix a motor that went in the back of my 86' Toyota 4Runner (Im never getting rid of that truck, I absolutely love it. I had that seizure when I was working on it and when the EMTs asked my birthday when I was still half conscious, I said my birthday was in 1986 lol. I was actually born in 1989 hahaha) that raised and lowered the rear window on the tailgate and the 3 bolts that held it in had rusted so bad that they snapped off instead of unscrewed. So when I went to drill them out I put too much pressure on the drill and the bit snapped sending it through my finger in 2 places. It was bleeding quite a bit and I think in one spot it hit the bone in my finger. It didnt hurt at all either which was awesome... until of course the adrenaline stopped flowing... then it hurt lol. But yeah I just wrapped it in a paper towel with some neosporin and taped it and went back out to work on it :P I still have that motor too :) I had to buy a new one to put in my truck though because the motor appears to be dead... but im going to try to resurrect it soon and use it as a robot drive motor because it only needs 12v and has a very decent amount of torque :)
Oh, and one of the scars, the deepest one, is actually healing very nicely. You can barely see it anymore compared to about 2 weeks after it happened. The other one though is still pretty visible... ah well :)
-
Just burnt myself on my desoldering iron about 30 seconds ago >_<
-
ouch that sound very painful (the one about your fingers) I don't even want to think about it :-X <-this is actually me barfing. lol ;D

great story!
Keep wounding yourself for the sake of our amusement. ;)
-
A colleague of one of my teachers was in the army as a technician of some sort(they both were) and they were working on a certain military device that needed to be fixed. So the guy was soldering something in there and it was a tight fit so he couldnt solder and see at the same time. He had to remove the soldering iron and look in to see his work. Well one of the times that he removed the soldering iron, he accidentally rested it on his forehead and apparently didnt realize it for a second or two hahaha.... yeah :)
Ive also had an electrolytic capacitor blow up in my face once. Lucky for me there was a metal bar a little less than an inch wide in between my face and the capacitor at just the right distances that it shield my face from the metal and paper shrapnel :P it was cool though cuz the smoke lingered quite a bit :)
-
how do you blow a capacitor?? :D
-
well technically no one knows why capacitors blow up... at least thats what ive heard from a pretty reliable source. But believe me, it was a capacitor and it definitely blew up lol :P
-
me and a friend where playing around with the flash from a distosable camera and when taking off the capacitor i forgot to short it. boy did i get a shock when the sparks went flying and sent x volts through my players into my hand
-
not nice, my dad told me to lick the plug to a old fashoned flash for a 70's slr... DANG!

I dont know whats funnier. The fact that your dad told you to do it or the fact that you actually did it hahaha

All too well... sometimes its fun though to get shocked... ...especially when you charge one and throw it to someone so they catch it without thinking about it until its already in their hands >=D that always makes me feel better :P
-
My dad says they used to do that in college. ;D
-
We had to watch a training video when I was in the Navy. A radar tech working on my system was working on a klystron tube that produces about a megawatt of power, and had battleshorted all the safety switches so he could get readings. Long story short, he left his boot (with his foot still in it) welded to the deck, and they were cleaning the rest of him off the wall. They loved showing us that kind of stuff, it kept us from bypassing safety procedures too much. There was also this guy in Pearl that was working up on a radar antenna, and someone ignored the red tags and radiated out of the antenna. The tech working on the antenna had first degree burns all over his body where his skin had started to boil, and he had burst both his testicles.
-
o wow. so what happened to the second guy? they started transmitting and that happened?
-
Yeah, when you have people working aloft you have tagging procedures, usually double-blind. You red tag power switches, circuit breakers, etc. telling people not to turn the equipment on. Some genius decided to ignore all the tags, transmitted, and microwaved the poor fellow.
-
how do you blow a capacitor?? :D
You can only blow electrolitic capacitor... Did you know that caps are short of the opposite of a diode!!!
So try applying an overrated voltage with correct pollarizing... Wait some time (30 sec or so depending on the cap)
and then reverse the voltage.... You should have a fire cracker then!!!
hehehe
-
all over his body where his skin had started to boil, and he had burst both his testicles.
owchy!!
-
and he had burst both his testicles.
I will NEVER ignore instructions from now on. I feel sorry for that guy. Did he live?
-
ya but was in emotional pain for the rest of his life...he commit suiside ;D poor guy.
-
If my "capacitors" burst like that, id probably kill myself too... plus if I had all that scar tissue all over my body and most likely cancer in some places I wouldnt want to live with that. Id be the first person to ever jump out of an airplane without a parachute or an intended landing zone :P
-

By the looks of your sig, what are you waiting for?
JK mate, that's just the risk you take when you post your pic in your sig ;) ;D
-
*Begins to cry uncontrollably and runs upstairs to mommy*
No im JK :) I dont really care what comments people make about my appearance, joking or otherwise(like in your case :P). Its what I know and dont know that matters :)
-
I heard that people who make fun of other people have low self-esteem and try to make themselves fell good about themselves by doing that. ;D
This actually happened a week ago. I just took a 9v battery and a DC motor. So I put the two end of the battery to the motor and it starts spinning. Then I put it to my nail and I'm like "hey I don't need to go to the dentist anymore, this sound just like it." Well after I did that a lot, my fingernail cracked in the middle. My battery is red, my motor is red, because I bled so much. It didn't break on the part that's white that you cut off. It cracked the way that I don't have half of it anymore.
P.S. Please don't ask for pics. ;D
-
I wont
can't say anything about them
o look who decided to join us (http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e398/RussianCommy/smilies/threadworthlesswithoutpics.gif)

All im saying I support the smilies' opinions :)
-
I once had an entire 555 stick completely into my friggen index finger...
WHAT were you doing?!?!? :o
-
probably tried to jam the 555 timer chip into a circuit board, it slipped and whoops , into his finger
-
I wanted to see if I could increase the frequency at which I can click the mouse for when I finally get time to play BattleField 2. But alas, all it did was make me bleed >_<
But yeah what happened was I went to take the 555 timer out a dip socket and I only used my fingers without prying it up a little first. So when I applied more force to get it out, the thing flipped in my hand and went into my finger... it sucked.... that happened with another 14 pin IC but only like 3 or 4 pins went in lol. I finally learned after the 5th or 6th time that I should change the way I retrieve ICs from socket :P
-

did you end up making it click faster, I've seen that done before
-
Yeah but then the oscillations were just too fast my mouse shattered after about 5 minutes. It couldnt seem to withstand a 4mHz click rate for too long apparently. Ah well. :P
-
4 mhz for a mouse? :-\ wth
-
4Mhz = 4,000,000 cycles per second, you try getting poked at that speed for 5 minutes :P
-

why would you try 4000 clicks a second?
-
4,000,000 not 4,000 lol
But it was a joke...
-
yea i realised....after 20 mins of scratching my normally shaped head ;) ;)
-
(http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e398/RussianCommy/cool%20pics/OhSnap.gif)
-
lol that went really slow on my computer ;D looked so funny.
-
I just tin plated my finger with my desoldering iron accidentally... I should really pay some extra attention to that sort of thing :P
-
haha lol yesterday when i was soldering my $40 i dripped a 1cmX1cm circle on my foot. (too busy talking to dad... he was telling me to be careful with the iron) lol
-
Is it me or do you just keep injuring yourself Dragon? ;D
Meh, look at it from the bright side, that proves that you're a very active electronicist...or...
-
I've had IC stabbed into my fingers, prying them loose, prying, prying, prying, flip, congrats you are now a cyborg.
This didnt happen to me, but yesterday we finally got our FIRST robot driving, I drove it around and almost hit some lockers and a table, person number 2 crashed into the lockers, person number 3 almost hit himself, hit the table, flipped around hit 3 lockers, and then rammed into a mentor. It was a fun day.
Also I almost short shrapnel into a mentors eye, I was breaking a chain and suddenly part of the chain breaker broke.
Also relating to FIRST I was unaware that my team members(woot im the leader) used screws to place things on the electronics board, I threw it up and caught it and a screw impaled my wrist right next to my artery.
Same day I was concentrating on moving two 26 gauge wire and putting them next to some 12 gauge, reaching for the screwdriver that stabbed me a week ago unaware that a team mate just put a freshly cut peice of steel next to me, I hit the metal and made a good cur along the bottom of my hand.
And before anyone says that the ost injury prone person shouldn't be leader, let me say this: If the most injury prone person is not leader, the you have to do all the explaining on how that injury came to be, also if you ever dream of being leader then when the injury prone person(me) slits his wrist you gain power, its a win win!!! :D
-
It sound like you lead a painful life.
-
Give me an allen wrench i'll impale my hand, give me a propane torch or a welder and nothing will happen.
-
lol, unfortunately for other people I don't hurt myself that often.
-
Yo dragon, I just got the best idea ever!
make a robot with a PIR sensor, and program it to follow you everywhere.
Place a webcam on top of it and use an RF/Bleutooth tranceiver to send the live videostream to your PC and record it.
Then everytime you get hurt, You'll have it recorded on you PC! And you'll be able to share it with us!
-
lol, just make a robot parrot that sits on your shoulder, you get less strange looks then a giant metal contraption following you everywhere....... altough.......[quickly begins construction of 200 pound robot to follow me around in school all day] I wonder what the cops would say.......
although they are the same cops that let me bring a propane torch to school, and the ones that deal with my random questions about various weapons laws in schools such as tasers, and the ones that overhear me and my friend talking about getting a vest, attaching a bunch of batteries covered in duct tape to it, putting a bunch of LEDs on it, yelling oh god a bomb, and throwing it into a room turned on.......
-
hahahahaha that is a great idea Rebel :) I almost fell REALLY hard today in a parking lot. I was being dumb and goofy while hanging out with my girlfriend and 2 of our friends. It woulda HURT but luckily im an expert and saving myself from falling.... just not tinning my fingers :P
I have gotten hurt countless times. Not all being electronics though. I think it all started when I was 2 years old and stepped on a bee ground hive... Nothing feels better than ~200 bee stings and a day in the emergency room.... Ive been to the emergency room too many times... its kinda boring now :P
@Game Freak:
hahaha nice one there. Although I would rather have a robot following me around than something sitting on my shoulder. Ill just make like 4 helicopter robots to follow me around so they can get all kinds of dramatic and intense angles of any action :P
And the whole batteries idea. Wellll lets just say I think it would be best if you refrained from doing that :P
-
well I never get hurt enough to go to the hospital
just some minor cuts occasionally
I wonder why? ;)
-

I wonder why? ;)
Cuz your a wimp :P
Just kidding :D Its because your lucky :)
-
lol
lucky has nothing to do with it , safety is key
I just hope that dragon and gamefreak do not have to operate any table saws or jigsaws in the near future :D
seriously , wear goggles and think before you do something
-
umm... i dont think the safety gogles would want to put themself inbetween them and the tools lol
-
lol, didint yoou read what I said? Its the small everyday tools that noone ever hurts themselves on, and I find a creative way to stap/impale/slit/slice/cut/gore myself with. But with a band saw I never get hurt.....
So far non of mr robotics injuries have led to the hospitol, and if they did my parent would probably try to put a stop on my hobby/dream/career :P
It is a FIRST rule to wear safety google, although I only hvae mine on half the time since Im normally doing electronics work.
I wonder what would happen if someone went downtown with a robot(s) following them, lol, I really want to see the cops reaction, especially if the robots had sensors to detect them and they flew in front of you for portection :P
-
LOL I love this topic. ;D
Nice sig gamefreak. ;)
Check out my sig if you want to relax even more than you do from reading this topic...
-
you probably hurt yourself with the little tools because you are not as cautious around them. luckily i have never done anything with a band saw. mostly mostly I just burn, shock, jab, and decapitate myself.........maybe i haven't decapitated myself......not yet anyways.
-
lol, i never hurt myself too much when working on electronics. Its usually only a burn or a scratch. I havnt impaled myself with anything recently. Like I said, my most recent injury was tin plating one of my fingers when I went to discharge my desoldering iron after desoldering a joint :P It hurt less than actually touching the soldering iron itself but was still pretty painful. It didnt leave an actual burn mark or anything so thats good. Im really not as accident prone as my posts seem to make me out to be :P
I work with bandsaws, lathes, drills, large disc sanders, table saws, various different welding equipment and such quite often and havnt hurt myself with any of those. :) I do wear safety goggles unless im working with electronics. I remember when I went to a FIRST robotics competition at Drexel University about 3 or 4 years ago with my robotics team(which I hated for the most part... they were a bunch of jerks... plus I was a freshman in high school... which means I had no importance in life :P because thats how the hierarchy goes :) but anyway...) When I went with my team we had a lot of fun and such and our robot did really well and was very powerful because of the gear boxes our team leader had made for our robots four CIM motors. We had the strongest robot out there. Our team number was 204. I dont go to that high school anymore so I have no idea how the robotics team is going but I have a feeling it sucks because we lost our most important people during my sophomore year there (I quit about 3 weeks into the year because we had so many dumb asses and time wasters that it just wasnt worth it. Plus we had already lost 2 of our most important people on the team) So that was heavily disappointing. Now I work alone so I dont have to worry about that crap. Come to think of it, the amount of injuries I incur when working on my robots has dropped by out 95% since I started working alone :)

Fixed the schematic :)
-
Thanks for the motivational talk dragon... I just started in a group of 4 for a project for school. But (for now )everything is great :D
-
Of course rebel :) What kind of community member would I be if I didnt take a fellow roboticists place in the hierarchy seriously :P Nah im just kidding. I dont really see freshmen as insignificant... unless they really are insignificant... ALL the freshmen I encounter lately seem to be waste of life, locusts. When I was a freshman I was already building computers and fixing them :P...... anyway
I has a Coke (http://www.tams.unt.edu/dynamic/store/images/coke_liter.gif)! It are make brain go ZOOOOM! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speed_of_Light)

What year are you in? I'm in the second year of college (not sure what name you give that year...sophmore?)
-
1st year: Freshman
2nd year: Sophomore
3rd year: Junior
4th year: Senior
Im a Senior in High School.
Your a Sophomore in College.
Heres the rank break down.
(Yes, rank :D)
.:Middle School or below:.
- not valid in hierarchy
.:High School:.
- Freshman
* Sophomore
** Junior
*** Senior
.:College:.
*** Freshman
**** Sophomore
***** Junior
#***** Senior
The more stars the higher your rank. If you have a pound symbol, your at the top :)
There are, of course, special badges and merits you can achieve or lose at any level of the hierarchy.
:P its fun when you make education this complex and difficult :D
-
yeahh... good luck with that
;)
Here in Belgium it's not that important... I guess it isn't anywhere else in the world...
-
Its not really important here either... its just that no one likes Freshmen in high school because they think they know everything and theyre actually very stupid and ignorant usually.
I kinda made that little hierarchy up for the most part. Its fun and time consuming :P

funny you should say that , recently a freshmen was trying to convince me[ a sophmore] ht 0/0 is 99, despite the fact that it isimpossible to divide by 0, I even had a senoir on my side...
-
Chuck Norris can divide by 0.
-
0/0 is 99
you're kidding right?
-
Im sorry to say that im not kidding, he tried to prove it to me by saying that 99*0=0, so 0/0=99
As far as im concerned anything divided by 0 is infinity, or undefined.
-
that was his "proof"?? OMG I hope you kicked him in the teeth....
-
The argument went on for an hour, because every time I said I was done arguing, he would put words in my mouth such as: "So your right, im wrong, end of story, thats typical", when I said: "It isnt worth arguing with you, im done"
And he sopposedly has some desease(cant spell right now :() so all i could do was ignore him....
-
hahaha sounds like you had some fun. ;D
-
man I HATE it when people are just that dumb. It gives a very strong headache and makes me quite very very angry... :)
-
*cough* should have *cough* hit him *cough* ::)
-
lol, it was also the week that I was sick and losing my voice, when I was done with him i had no voice left, althoug i did learn how to whistle....
-
althoug i did learn how to whistle....
hahahaha that is random as hell hahahaha. Glad you learned something from the matter lol. Such as not wasting breathe on friggen idiots heh
-
lol, well i couldnt talk so I started trying to whistle again, I finnally got it, just took 15 years of my life :D
-
Big applause for gamefreak ! :P
People like that dividing by 0 guy are a waste of air...freshman or not.
Let's build robots programmed to kill anyone who doesn't answer correctly to that question.
Damnit, what robot should I build next? The HDL_CinC_Dragon-stalking/filming robot, or the waste of air killing robot? ???
-

waste of air killing robot
just don't put a air intake valve
-
axe + sound sensor = killing robot specialized for stupid people ;D i wish i had one
-
Definitely a waste of air killing robot. That problem is more important.
Trumpkins idea is pretty good and conforms to the KISS protocol :)
Instead of an axe though I think we should go with a chainsaw. That way we dont need to put a burst piston on the bot :P
.... I bet the FBI is going to see this and think we are actually going to try to kill a lot of people... *cough*coverup*cough* lol j/k <_< >_>
-
definently a chainsaw. maby an AK47 as backup. ;)
-
cant we just "borrow" one of the police robots that are tele-operated that can be equipped with a shotgun and have a camera, arm, microphone, and speaker? That way we cant tell them there judgement :D
And that would definatly fall under: Wounded in battle :P
-
Anywho, weve definitely veered off topic more than we usually do lol. Lets end the conversation here and wait for someone to hurt themselves :P
-
well here we go as i was reading this topic my computer froze and i desised to kick my computer with no shoe on. juess what i sprained my toe
-
lol, Im telling you guys, these "dumb" rob ots and computers are outsmarting us.
Working on my robot arm, all i had at home was some 1.5" by 1.5" wood, so I prototyped with it, and as the servo wheel that I was too lazy to screw on popped off right when the arm reached its peak, the end block that had many sharp pieces of wood protruding out of it stabbed my hand. :D
2/7/08: Hey im winning the injuries, WOO, today at robotics someone was prototyping an arm design similiar to a scissor lift, I was opening and closing it and someone else tried to take it away, so they were both talking about it well my thumb was jammed in between the two parts, The mentors started freaking out as I was calming saying to let go so I could have my thumb back, It would appear that as well as not bleeding for 2 minutes after i get cut, that i also dont feel my fingers getting crushed :D
-
I just hurt myself really bad but (unfortunately) didn't do it with anything electronic. I completely cut off the tip of my left hand pointer finger yesterday opening up egg roll packages.
-
Um helloooo where are teh pickedschures(pictures)?
-
A topic with a lot of blood and even more pain!!!
Bring the pictures baby, I'm under 18 but no problem!!!
-
i would post pictures of my finger but it's all bandaged up and it hurts like crap when i try to take it off. however my brother did take a picture of the second bloody rag i used to stop the bleeding, i'll post a pic later.

I now know what it feels like to tin your fingers. Ouch. ;D
-
Other than a couple of soldering iron burns, and getting ic's stuck in my fingers, last year at the FIRST Regional in LA I almost got decapitated by an out of control pneumatic arm.

You don't happen to have a movie of that do you? :D

When I was 5 I grabbed the blade of a fully heated soldering Iron closed fisted. Never again. Lol

unfortunately no... and hopefully I won't have another opportunity to take one!

When I was at a Regional for FIRST 2 or 3 years ago at Drexel University, I almost had my finger ground into powder by one of our robots gear boxes for the wheels... that wasnt fun... then I almost got run over by one of the other teams' little robot carrying robot.... go figure..... then I too almost got decapitated by a pneumatic arm... might have even been team MOEs.... or maybe it was a team next to them in the pit.... I dunno, I just remember seeing lots of green and that big green tower they always have with them...
.... anywayyyyy

welcome to the club

lol, these storys made me laugh for half 20 mins, thi isnt reall robotics, but once i was in the car with dad and at the time i was really fascinated by the ciggy lighter,so i put my finger on it and had a blister for a few weeks. ;D sorry about being off the topic cos i only started robotics this year,i think i might of once burned myself on the soldering iron ;D
-
OMG i did that too.
I asked my grandpa what would happen if i touched it and he told me, but i still did it. ::)
-
Wow... at least mine was an accident! :P
-
I have to say this is one of the better threads. Unfortunately no one has posted videos of anything. PEOPLE!!! FROM NOW ON WEAR A CAMERA ON YOUR HEAD!! lol
-
well the only thing my bots have done so far with me is that they dont actually do what i intend them to when they are run the first timee...
days of hardwork and what do i get in the end... fool reprogram the robot by using a new algorithm

PEOPLE!!! FROM NOW ON WEAR A CAMERA ON YOUR HEAD!! lol
give this a try

he does have a sence of humor. although its a bit unusual

My most unusual "injury" to date is ferrofluid in my eyes. Stings a bit, but the odd part for me was actually thinking I needed to avoid getting my head too close to any magnets until they were rinsed for fear of the spiking effect of magnetic fields on ferrofluid. ;) Of course my right eye still tilts a little to the north every now and then
-

i can't even get my parents to get my scence of humer never mind the girls in my class :'(

Not many people get mine until they think about it for a minute or two or until I explain it >_<
We need to colonize Mars and make sure only the cool people (the average SoR member :P) can come with us :D

We need to colonize Mars and make sure only the cool people (the average SoR member :P) can come with us :D
I think we should keep Earth only because UPS does not deliver to Mars and I needs my robot parts :)
-
ah crap... youre right.... well were just gunna have to make a shipping lane for UPS... of course, that would mean it would be the Universal Parcel Service instead of United Parcel Service :)
-
Maybe we can build a robot to ship stuff to us.
-
Stick with humans providing the shipping service. If robots are handling the deliveries it would be almost like shipping body parts, and sooner or later they would catch on to that and start seizing the shipments.

good call, the ensuing war could get ugly for us. Maybe we should just find our resources elsewhere anyway. Theres gotta be some silicon under Mars' crust. Besides, the world is going to end in 2012 anyway :P

2012???!!!! how do we not know if china's got some plan to nuke the whole world tommorow or something, frankly i would quite scared :'( ;D

Oh crap youre right... now what are they gunna do? Put lead in our solder!? ... oh.... wait...
-
lol you guys are crazy
and i am a bit afraid about 2012, i mean it does seem... a bit special, so many coincidental predictions to one day?
see the robot influence is already spreading through the world's best robotics community...
ooaoh! what next!?!
-
and i am a bit afraid about 2012, i mean it does seem... a bit special, so many coincidental predictions to one day?
the same thing was predicted for 2000 and nothing happened
there are a lot of coincidences indeed for 2012 , but some of them have been incorrectly analyzed to be 2012
-
Just burnt my finger on a KA7805 vreg >_< something must have been shorting it out >_<
-
focus, people!
Oh crap youre right... now what are they gunna do? Put lead in our solder!? ... oh.... wait...
They put lead in the last RoHS compliant Axon prototype . . . I tested for it just in case . . . so they are giving me a big discount on the next manufacturing run ;D

wasent realy any thing to do with a robot i was stickin a pen back to gether wit hot glue and i manage to drop some on me
wiped it off and then manage to do it again it has now blistered
-
lol, in electroinics i blew up a 555 chip by accident.i melt something weird and i smelt my board, only to get a huge wiff of smoke, whichstank,i inhaled it by accident and my throat was burning. then my friend went and killeda speaker, beats me how :D
-
and my throat was burning
thats not good :o
-
well not burning but it felt weird and it seemed like the smoke was stuck in my throat,oh well, its all over now :)

my List of injurys..
*Scar on right forearm from exact-o knife. i friend tripped...
*Burns on my left hand and chest. i was working with a lithium battery pack, 24volt at 220 amp/hrs, it exploded. (im now afraid of lithium)
* A friends 4wd robot ran me over. it was one of those stupid battle bot things and something shorted in it. Scar on my leg.
*many soldering iron burns.
* and the pasty resistence!
Once while using "quick dry" epoxy i epoxied my hand to my desk. this was a work injury. i bent oven in my seat to pick up a droped component and diddent know my epoxy gun was leaking. 15 minuets later and a bandage wrap and i was free.
Truckstop
-
Well, my list is
-many soldering iron burns
-molten plastic when i was injection molding a part
-12 stiches after i dropped my dremel with saw attachment attached, dove to stop it from smashing into the ground when i knocked the on switch cutting my hand to pieces.
-
Had a good one happen to me:
I was testing a thruster rig for our ROV for the MATE competition. I had a modified bilge pump (the impeller and the outer housing was cut off) with a 120mm comp fan blade attached to it (for sh*ts and giggles), all rigged to an 8" piece of PVC pipe and a T junction. This whole rig was in a vice on our workbench...
So I hooked up the motor controller, the power source (car battery) and an alpha build of my control software. After turning everything on I let her rip- and rip in did! :o It was powerful enough to send the whole rig rotating in the vice where it slammed into the edge of the worktable, causing all eight blades of the fan to spectacularly shatter and fly across the room! One caught me a good one right below my eye... No serious damage done but wow did it scare the crap out of me!
Lessons learned:
1) Always make sure things you DON'T want to move are very secure
2) Always power something up *slowly* if your not sure what the end result will be (and sometimes even if you are!)
3) Never get so overexcited you forget safety ;)

Back in highschool (2003) my team (I was in FIRST back then. Oi I sound old!!!) had a robot named the Evil Machine for its incredibly rough play with other robots. It had two "wings" that would pneumatically pop out under something like 100 psi to make it a very wide robot for knocking over bins.
Slammed three times by those wings, making it hard to breathe for a day each time.
Two years later my team built a 14 foot telescoping arm (elevator style, not outwards). It had to lift a 10 pound tetrahedron made out of pvc and other home depot supplies. Sure enough when I'm checking something as it raises up (we were testing to see how easy it was to tip on full extension) the cable for the telescoping arm snapped, plummeting everything down onto my head.
I've had my feet ran over by a multitude of robots, weighing from 250 pounds down to 1 (the one pounder didn't hurt, I'll admit).
I've been electrocuted a number of times, but more than anything else I've been burned by hot ICs due to a mistaken wiring, a soldering iron, or just components that run hot.
Thankfully I've always worn my safety goggles and never had any serious injury *knock on wood*.
But you know what they say fellas - if it's your passion, no pain, no gain!

The list of my injury
1:i burned my toe
2:got almost decapitate got a bad hear cut
3:and got electrocuted now that was a bad one
thats all folks

2:got almost decapitate got a bad hear cut
what?

- Exacto knife fell off my hand and landed in my toe like a dart
- Soldering iron burn
- Hot glue burn
- slight cut with the sharp things in the back of the board
- slight cut with the propeller of the aerial platform.

I remember a nice story a few years ago. I was 18 or 19 and I was sitting next my workbench in the basement. A god friend of my gave me his xbox to make it a lil bit nicer.
I was prepearing a window on the upper part of the consol, I had a bad day and I did start this project because I was left again.
Deep minded I'm cutting the plastic with a hand operated hacksaw (it was the first thing around me to do this work so it was the best choice).
I didn't get that something happend, since I noticed that something drops down to my arm. Looking up to the sprinkled room ceiling, I get that my right thumb hurts (really really hurts!!! Don't try this... ...bad idea). I had cut myself over 1 cm frontal through my thumpnail (and of cause my thump) a nearly 4mm wide 6th finger (you know its tiny but it has a nail and hang around free).
I pulled of the saw graped some lope and rubbertape and rush to the washbasin to get the wound a bit clean and make a pressure combined. (I hadn't to do so much, the blood pushed out the most plasticmaterial.)
I decided to stop working this day (sawing to myself and cutting my... ...you know... ...enough for one day), the last thing I had done was to painting over the bloody sprinkles. I went up in the livingroom to watch some TV, of cause my mother noticed that there was a over 4 cm diameter combined made of old t-shirt pieces and rubber tape around my thumb (only around this, it looks like I have a gigant finger). She was accustomed that I have some small burns or cuts, so she asks: "Have you cut you some more?" my short answer "A Lil bit..." She wants to sea what must be covert so much, after a few min I was ride of this "show me, show me, bla bla" so I opened my rubbertape and the blood shoots over the table. My mom got crazy "We must go to doctor, it must be sewn...", to this my short answer"you would to see... ...there it was... ...yes,it hurts enough so no sewing!" I got a new combined and left it.
Without sewing only by strong combinions my thumb grow together again, the only thing remembering me is a scar.
(Remember, cut everything away from you.) (At the long time with plaster It was a awful feeling to touch something with the little part, it really feels like a 6th finger. It needs long before this strange feeling ends.)
-
I am very new to robotics but I love the community, my DIY project mishaps well I messed with rockets for awhile so we had our share of various explosions and bad launches. But one comes to mind, I made a huge rocket, it was designed to go ten miles straight up. I spend months working on the thing. Well, when I launched it it went up about 100 feet did a 90 and flew and blew up in the parking lot. As to electronics, I stabbed myself trying to recover a heat sync. I needed four stitches.
-
when you do something like that you have much more appreciation for what the tool can do there for you take more care an doiuble check everything. well that is what i found after recieving 10 stiches from a dremel.
-
My only mess ups with soldering irons were once when i was a noob i touched the tip when it was still hot :o
And another time when i dropped it into my lap and burned a hole through my shirt ;D.
-
hot gulue on hand
motor tip in chest
solder burns
