Title: Sprockets and MPH
Post by: NGuggemos on March 14, 2012, 08:48:17 PM
Hi, I am trying to find the size(amount of teeth) of a sprocket I'm using in my machine. I am using two sprockets with a chain. I know that one of the sprockets has 11 teeth, and I want the machine to travel 10mph. Do I need any other information, such as rpm of motor, chain length, center to center length of both sprockets, etc... Can anyone help me by giving me an equation, or link to a site where I can calculate this. Thanks.

You need to know motor RPM, Circumference of wheels or treads, and desired RPM.

Velocity=
Final rpm (after being reduced or increased by second sprocket)*Circumference

Circumference= Pi*Diameter
