For a class project we need to construct a remote killswitch (for a go-cart). I presume that we could simply splice this into the button kill we currently have or buy a new button killswitch and replace the switch itself, and have this as a simple electronic switch activated by a remote signal.
As this isn't quite my forte however, I was wondering if someone could point us in the right direction about what kind of transmitter/receiver to use, what kind of switch to use, etc.
Any help would be appreciated!

Hi,
If this ia supposed to be safe, you need to make it like a "Dead Mans Handle", where loosing the signal at the receiver will kill the motor, whether because someone pressed a button on the transmitter, the receiver got out of range or the transmitter had a fault.

You can simply hack cheap RC car. In it You will find Your receiver, and transmitter comes as part of the RC Car toy being hacked. Then You can disconnect both motors of the hacked RC Toy and replace one of them by a relay which terminals are connected to Go-Cart main circuit, so when You press/release the button on the remote, main Go-Cart circuit gets broken/activated and Go-Cart stops/starts.
If this project is somehow related to safety (say parent looking after a child in a Go-Cart), a Dead Man Switch can be implemented. When button on a remote is released or Go-Cart goes too far, relay breaks the circuit and cart stops.
