Title: [help] Comparison between PIC16 and Atmel ATmega
Post by: aruna1 on February 23, 2011, 04:36:37 AM
Hi
This a question from one of my exam papers.I searched all over internet but couldn't find any article or information source comparing atmel vs PIC in following manner.
all i could find was threads talking about which is better.none of them discussed the matter with respective to following points.
so can some one help me here?

thank you

Compare two microcontrollers PIC16F and Atmel ATmega considering following facts

   1. Architecture
   2. Microcontroller core
   3. ALU capabilities
   4. Instruction set
   5. Reliability of operation

Your exam wants YOU to read the data sheets on both processors and then answer the question.

The 5th question however, can not be easily gleaned from the data sheet unless they have figures for MTBF (Mean Time Before Failure). You could call or Email the Sales or Tech support staff of each manufacture to ask for this info.

This question is fairly wide open as there is quite a difference among the PIC16Fs and I think this also applies to the ATmegas but this is only in what peripherals are on the chips. This wouldn't apply the the exam question so don't get lost in those parts of the data sheets.

If there is anything specific in either data sheet you don't understand then post that question and a link to the data sheet in question with a reference to the page number.

Good luck

hi waltr
thank you for the reply.

I have trouble with commenting on microcontroller core and ALU capabilities.datasheets does not provide any discription about specialty in each types core or ALU capability.
I see atmel has general purposes registers directly attached to ALU while in PIC they are not directly connected. Is there any technical term or some thing to describe this difference?

Yes and it is described in the links provided by billhowl.

This is what your instructor wants you to learn about in answering the exam question.
