Electrical door release?
« on: March 01, 2009, 02:45:30 PM »
I am building a radio controlled open/close electrical opener/closer (lock when close) and I have been trying to think of the mechanical scheme for this. Should I use a solenoid or an electromagnet? When it is high the magnet will attract, and when low the magnet will repel.

And a solenoid would just have one way (open)

So is there a product similar to the magnet I mentioned, and cheap?

Edit: this is a light door, a minifridge, but requires a strong magnet or solenoid to lock and stay locked similar to a deadbolt, aside from the fact that deadbolts dont open the door, just unlock them.

well you could consider suction if the fridge has a seal on it. or if you only want it to unlock or lock and not fly open you could use solenoids. electromagnets are a maybe but they might cause interference with other appliances and or the contents of the fridge.

Black dot is the hinge of the door - if the linear actuator(on the left side) gets shorter, the door opens.
